Pink, how many refrigerators do you have?? Sounds like a lot of eggs kept through the laying cycles could add up quickly! Sounds like a really good idea though. So do you just keep the really dark eggs? Not incubating any? Do you do this with all of your colors varieties? This is boggling my mind! But then, it doesn't take much!

What do you do with all of those eggs at the end of the laying cycle?

My flocks aren't that large, so it's easier for me to keep track of who is laying what. I don't save them, I just make notes on who is laying how dark, size, shape, glossiness, etc.

Wynette,

Hopefully, I can contain myself too! I figured a notebook for roos, and a notebook for hens ought to do the trick. Pics and descriptions of all, eggshell samples (thanks for that tip geebs!!), and pics of the eggs down the line. I have no problem with culling, but I do have a problem with building more coops!

That, in it's self, SHOULD keep me under control... I hope

I only hatch my darkest eggs and yes I do that for each color variety. I blow the 1st 24 and the eggs I collect throughout the laying cycle from each hen that lays an appropriate egg. They are marked and stored in a storage shelf cabinet that my DH reluctantly let me have after much pleading on my part so that I had somewhere to store them. I have divided the cabinet into 2 halves and use one side for the blown eggs and the other side for the shells that I kept from hatches. I also breed Welsummers and egg color conservency is one of my top priorities with these 2 breeds, saving the shells from earlier generations has really helped me out, especially when trying to gauge a new generations eggs to their parents, having the actual egg or shell in my hand makes a world of difference. I do go through the cabinet and clean house from time to time to make more space.

Ohh...and I have 4 fridges.....2 are designated Egg-a-rators for eating eggs.

I always send a shell sample with my hatching eggs to that folks can see the very darkest my line has laid; I store them in the basement in a closed box, so they do not have exposure to sunlight. I don't ever want anyone to think I'm pulling one over on them! (Been there/done that...don't want anyone else to go through what I did early on!)

Well Pink, I'm really impressed!!

I read on another thread, some gal "hoarding" eggs, and taking them out at night and playing with them!

Glad to hear they are blown instead. I was envisioning 20 fridges, all churning to store all of those eggs

Four fridges sounds waaaay more reasonable!

That's awesome that you do that Wynette, do you do this for each breed of bird where egg color is of importance? I also keep my shells from daylight, they come out only for reference and when someone is seeing them.
I really do not sell too many eggs or chicks, but a few time a year when I hate to see such pretty eggs go to waste and the bators are full....I will post them on CL, when they are sold I like to disclose as much information about my birds to the buyer as I can and I fully advise them that they are birds that I am working on and I know sometimes I bore these wonderful folks to death with the details, but I feel the same as you and many other wonderful chicken folks out there that honesty is the best.
