YOWZA! That's quite an egg!

VERY pretty egg! I'd say it's a 7.5 - 8! But, you really cannot count the first months' worth of eggs, sorry to say. In egg contests, the eggs submitted must have been laid by girls who have been laying more than a month. Let's all cross our fingers she continues laying this dark, because that egg is gorgeous!

Will do....should have done it yesterday when I had the egg in my hand. I have 2 more of her kiddos that are almost POL.
Splash Marans egg color is a little project I've got going on on the side of the Blue Coppers. Hoping to someday get an almost BC colored egg from a Splash....I think it will be hard to get there but it is certainly very educating and fun on the way.

WOW!

This is very true Wynette, thanks for adding that. I try to keep their 1st 24 eggs if they are laying super dark, if they continue to lay dark such as their 1st 24 they can go into the breeding pen for some test breedings. I know it sounds crazy saving all of those eggs but it is such a help when making breeding decisions 6 mos or even more down the road. I like to keep track of how long they will lay those darker eggs before lightening up. I have one hen right now that has just gone into a molt and is the only one with egg color consistency to that point, the others all got pathetically lighter prior to molt. I save eggs through out the laying cycle as well. Keeping them around for people to physically see and touch when they come to purchase hatching eggs or chicks is very valuable info for the buyer, I feel they need to know what they can or cannot expect.

Nice EGGIE!! that looks like a solid 8 to me... I would do a single hatch with it... If it is a roo and the pullet continues to lay... you are really in business... I wouldn't mess around with saving it for a month...Nope on day 6 that baby is in the bator.... You could improve you stock with it.. If the hen doesn't continue to lay... You still have the chick.. Sell it as a pullet or give away a roo... That simple... I would mark the pullet and watch it as Pinkchick suggested... I hope the roos genes are as good as this hens... Is this your generation of birds or is this your first generation grown out? Save the shell from the hatching and make a card or chart for the bird that laid it...Use a pieces of the shell and the picture with the Hershey and a pic of the adult bird all on the card/file so you have it as an easy reference... It is hard to remember things as so much times starts to slip by and you get lots of nice eggs.

What line did this hatch from and may we see a picture of the hen please.

There are a total of 3 chicks out now

Currently a total of 7 pipped. Can't fully see the other 2 eggs, so I don't know if they have pipped or not.

Nobody is currently zipping. I wish someone would start though!
