Please do find out from Bev what she thinks he may give you some wonderful offspring. I wouldn't mind having one like him. He would be a good looking show bird if you have any kids in 4-H or FFA.

Interesting info on the French Marans site under "The Different Varieties" tab states that the Blue Copper, Birchen and Blue varieties are derived from the Black Copper and are from the same genetic family.

Yes, and arent the Cuckoo and the Black Copper a separate strain, but a number of the other varieties come off of the Copper Black, and breeding back to them, basicly (I am not a geneticist) goes back to Black, I think??

Hmm, I didn't see that-I need to read it again.
What I understood was that the Black Copper is dominant when bred back to those related varieties. Black by itself (the Black variety) is apparently totally different genetically and not related. (?) I didn't read everything about the Black.

It also sounds like they are saying (among many other things on that page) that the very experienced breeders have used the Black Copper to improve egg color when needed with some of those other genetically related varieties, but strongly discourage using the Black Copper with any of the other unrelated varieties such as the Wheaton and Black .

That website really is a great resource to learn about the breed.

Anyway, Tina's correct; I guess he would be a sport and and is popping out down the line perhaps as a result of a cross or crosses several generations back.
I was just wondering if maybe it had to do with the crossing of lines in development of the newer blue varieties or the crossing of related lines to improve egg color?

Who, knows

Again, Tina is correct there as well; Beverly will know.

He's a pretty boy.

Cuckoo Marans are suppose to have white legs ,but they were crossed with Barred Rocks to produce a larger meat and egg bird. Maybe that's the Barred Rock trait being more dominant in those with the yellow legs.

Some of mine seem to have mottled legs, at least at this young age. By which I mean pink skin showing through, especially on the toes. I'm interested to see if they mature out of it or not.

oooh-Lucky you. I got 3 pullets and 3 cockerels. Would have rather had 4 and 2. But I guess it could have worse.
