MARANS: what are crosses (like CM x BCM = BCM color) called?

Hi All, Just as an aside, geography lesson ,Japan is in East Asia, Lebanon is in West Asia, India is in South Asia, Asia is a big Continent. LOL

Re the Cuckoo Marans X Black Coppers, yes they are both varieties of Marans, but they have totally different genotypes.
Cuckoo are a Barred,Silver,Extended Black bird, B/B S/S E/E
Brown-Reds(Black Coppers) are a Birchen, Mahogany, Gold bird, Mh/Mh s+/s+ ER/ER

The Cuckoo X BC is heterozygous for all alleles E/ER B/b+ Mh/mh+ S/s+
and although it may look like a Cuckoo or a BC (dependent on whether it is a BC male X Cuckoo hen or the reverse) it will not breed true. As such it is dishonest to sell it as a true breeding variety, in my opinion anyway.

but BC are a new color, what cross produced them, you need ? generations to get 'pure' color pattern, the cuckoo is the older color, and the point of this thread is not to sell the crosses but what you call them, are they marens, yes, are they a pure color type, no, with is cross you get barred roo (cuckoo) and black hen (gold or red lacing) , you do not get cuckoo or BC. the point is you still get a maren and maybe a new color

The Brown-Red (correct name for Black Copper) has been known since the 1100s, derived from the Brown-Red fighting games that were infused into the local landrace fowl around the towns of Marans & La Rochelle. Definitly not a new colour, in fact it was known and documented before the Cuckoo.
By the way the breed name is Marans not Maren, and no you would not have a new colour because it would not breed true.

I have 6 Marans. of course all the BCM's are cockerels and all the Blue Marans are pullets. (just my luck! More in the 'bator though

) If I let the Blues and the BCM's mate....does that give me Blue Copper?

If the birds have the correct genotype you will get all Blue or Black chickens, the pullets would be gold based & the cockerels split for gold & silver.
If the breeding of the parents is not the correct genotype you could get off colours including a sort of pseudo BC, again the pullets would be gold & the cockerels split for gold & silver.

If you use BCM roos and CM hens, I would just label them as "Sex-linked Marans". That way you are up-front about their parentage and people can still have the nice dark eggs.

I have removed this thread, cleaned up and now it's back. Please refrain from throwing verbal punches again.

I wonder why several of my topics have ended up "edited."

A good discussion though, is always helpful and stimulating. Everyone's opionions are helpful.

That being said...
Marans breeders are working hard and sacrificing much to improve and purify the breed, and I have great respect for that. As a breeder of alpacas and dogs previously I do not wish to dilute the gene pool with indiscriminate breeding. I am simply looking for good/bad ideas for breeding. .. and still have much to learn. This breed is quite challenging I'm finding.

Although I usually do my homework when I start a project, sadly I do not always do it BEFORE the project.
