I want to get some marans chickens--can anyone tell me the dofference between a black copper maran and a cucko maran? Also, where can I get some--seems all the hatcheries are sold out. Thanks.

Hi! My Pet Chicken has them as limited availability. I made a phone order so I could speak to them in person, they are really nice and helpful. I'm super happy with the order I got from them, mine are 4 wks. old now and are beautiful healthy girls!

Thank you Wild Horse!

Keep in mind the MyPetChicken sells hatchery stock. If you want dark eggs, it's best to buy from a breeder.

Why is it that hatchery stock will not produce dark eggs?

Mainly because they are producing quantity and not focusing on quality or breeding towards the Standard of Perfection, like a breeder would. With Marans, it is a constant challenge to keep and improve the darker egg color. Without improvement, you will in time, get eggs the color of a Barred Rock.
