March 2023 hatch-a-long

where did you order them from?

last year I got eggs from ebay. I knew shipped eggs were a gamble. They came and a couple were smashed, figured ok it happens. they were wrapped well so the others were still clean at least. I set them in my incubator and one of my girls was broody so gave her a couple of those and a couple of mine. None of mine developed (well 1 did but quit around day 10. :( ) and 3 shipped ones developed. 1 was a DIS on hatch day and 1 under my broody hatched and 1 in the incubator...... not too bad wish it was better...... The problem was I ordered BBS Cochins...... I got one "partridge looking chick" with clean legs and a yellow chick with clean legs........ Ummmmmmmm NOT Cochins so NOT what I ordered. I contacted the seller and basically got told that "he closed his ebay acct down so couldn't do anything for me". I messaged him again as he had stuff still listed and told him I would like a refund. We went back and forth a bit and then he "escalated it to ebay" (after I said I was going to). They found in my favor and told me to send the "item" back. I told them to tell me HOW to ship chicks that were now a couple weeks old since I had ordered hatching eggs.... LOL They ended up refunding me...........

my point of the whole story is if it was on ebay then try to get a refund or partial refund from her, even if listing says no refunds........ If it doesn't work then try going through ebay. I get that shipping eggs is a gamble but you at least expect eggs that have a chance of hatching and also the type you ordered.

Sorry things aren't going well.
I ordered them from breeders within 2 hours of my house, from basically the Polish version of Craigslist. So, unfortunately, no money back.

I decided to throw 10 eggs from my own mixed flock in to see if my cockerels are working. They won’t be birthday hatchers (if they’re even fertilized) but it will still be interesting to see what we get.

well that stinks. :(

Hopefully some of yours hatch for you!!!!!!!!

My eggs shipped (can't remember if I posted here or not........) and will be here Thurs!!!!!!!!! I was going to wait till Sat to set them so they hatched on the 18th but think I am going to set them Friday so I can join the Easter HAL too. Plus I am gone basically all day Sat so would miss most of them hatching most likely.

I am down to 18 eggs for the March 4th hatch. Hopefully I don't lose any more.
So far I have 49 eggs for March 18th hatch. Still collecting for 2 more days. I'll be setting them tomorrow night. (in case you feel like calculations are off, no they are not. The chicks stay in the incubator until then because they will be getting their Marek immunization at the vet. )
And.... I ordered hatching eggs!!! Close to 40 Augsburger hatching eggs are on their way here to be set on Thursday evening. Arriving today if all goes well. So the machine will be pretty full. Close to 100 eggs.

They look great, funky little chickens 🥰
100 eggs! That must be so exciting!

I'm joining in the March HAL! Setting 12 sablepoot eggs today then adding some serama eggs that should arrive later maybe tomorrow morning. I have low expectations for the seramas hatching (not had any luck with serama) so will probably order more for the Easter HAL 😁

Hey everyone! March is just around the corner. Are we R E A D Y ???:jumpy
So I finally got around to candling, weighing, and marking air cells on my 39 eggs in two incubators. We're on Day 12 now, and I had a few surprises:
* Only 1 not fertilized
* 1 very early quitter
* 1 air cell on the side, and
* 1 huge air cell and too much weight loss
So I'll be watching those two closely and see what happens at hatch.

In the pic below, #25 in the middle is ok - it's typical of all the others in the incubators. #34 is the air cell on the side, and #7 is that one with the massive air cell and lost too much weight already. It's likely just the angle I've got them laying for the photo, but they are all three roughly the same size and shape and same position:

So I'm mostly worried about that #7. When I set the eggs, this one weighed 67g. Last nite, it was 54g. I reset the scale and weighed again - yes, 54g. That's 20% weight loss already, when it should be closer to 6-7% (as are all of the others). And the air cell is just massive. I don't know what might have caused this - too porous shell, crack or pinhole I can't see? :idunno:fl (normal egg at left)

I'm not so worried about #34 with the air cell on the side. I'll just be watching to see where it pips, and make sure the air cell is UP at lockdown; and turn the pip UP if it pips anywhere else but the air cell.

More info:
Both of these eggs, #25 and #7, measure 2-1/2" in length and 5-3/4" circumference. They both weighed 67 grams when I set them to incubate. My incubator has fan-forced air.
#25 has lost 5g weight, or 7.5%. About right so far.
#7 has lost 13g weight, or 20%. Not right. At this rate, the weight loss will be 40% at lockdown instead of 13% where it should be.

Just logging this info for future reference, but also wondering if anyone else has encountered the same issue, and what was the outcome?

Pulled out my notes from last year. Sexing hatch, the Largest % loss I had that hatched was 13.3%. Two eggs lost over 14%, made it to lockdown, and didn’t hatch.

First hatch, largest loss thst hatched was 14%. Are you sure your initial weight is accurate? Did you see a hole or crack when you candles?
