March 2023 hatch-a-long

Pics
Pulled out my notes from last year. Sexing hatch, the Largest % loss I had that hatched was 13.3%. Two eggs lost over 14%, made it to lockdown, and didn’t hatch.

First hatch, largest loss thst hatched was 14%. Are you sure your initial weight is accurate? Did you see a hole or crack when you candles?
I set 39 eggs in two incubators, divided by size. I'm keeping a written log of all the weights and other pertinent info on all the eggs. All eggs in the same incubator as #7 ranged from 63-67 grams when I set them. So if it had been much lighter in weight, I'd have noticed. I can't see any cracks or pinholes when I candle, and the chick is moving around - so it's alive, so far. It's just so strange.

Plus, if I miscalculated the starting weight, and it has had a normal weight loss in the meantime (about 6-7%), and its weight now is 54 grams (double-checked), then the starting weight would have been about 58 grams. That's a fair amount less than the lightest egg I had set at 60 grams, and those were smaller in size. Nah, I'm pretty sure I measured right. Thanks for your input and taking time to find your notes. It's appreciated!

I will have to try to peek when I get home, but pretty sure I had some that lost a high % of weight and I was nervous after hearing about iluveggers eggs and mine hatched fine. Let me see if I posted here about it too.

There IS a chance I miscalculated the starting weight - I just want to be clear on this. I don't think so, but did I take a photo? No, I did not. Can I be sure something didn't interfere with the scale? No, I cannot. Am I able to instantly recognize a weight difference of 10 grams from one egg to the next? LOL right. No, I cannot. So....... 58 grams vs 57 grams is pretty close. 57 grams vs 67 grams could have been a mis-read. I was using very low light. So it's possible.

If so, the starting air cell would have also been huge for such a light weight in such a large egg. Possible. Not sayin' it's likely, but possible. I'll certainly be more careful and certain next time! And hoping :fl my starting weight was wrong, and this baby will be just fine. He'll just have lots and lots of room to hatch. :yaThis should be interesting to watch!

( :old *Notes to self: Add starting air cell markings to eggs before setting. Make sure scale stays clear of any possible obstructions, and is reset to "0" before each egg. Weigh all candidate eggs to choose even more similar weight and size at time of set.)

Just jumping over here from the February hatch along. Those guys are in lockdown today.

I took 2 dozen Call eggs from a friend to help her hatch hers. She has like 5 incubators going but has a lot of eggs coming in. I also put 5 of my own in. Plus I’m gonna be hatching another round of a dozen Ayam Cemani eggs. This time my son won’t have as easy of access to them. So hoping for a good hatch. The Cemani’s will be here tomorrow and the Call eggs have been in for 5 days now. Those are already showing great development, though there is a few I’m not 100% sure yet on. I’m gonna give them a few more days to see how well they do.

Picking up my eggs on Sunday.

Lavender & lav cuckoo -2
Isabel & crele cuckoo - 2
Buff brahma - 2

Might need to order another brooder plate to separate the chicks I have now from the new ones when the time comes.
Those are some fun breeds!
