March 2023 hatch-a-long

If they're all out you could safely let out all of that humidity. It's only needed for ones that are still pipped or soon to pip. You probably could move them and dry it quickly but I don't think you really need to and I'd say they're better off staying in there. You should remove any water source and drop the humidity setting right down if you have one. You could also try tilting open the lid a crack for a few seconds at a time until the steam is gone.

It does take a good couple of hours for them to dry so I wouldn't worry too much about that and I think I remember my cardboard was quite wet as well so it's probably normal. I think I even had chicks drinking some water that was pooling at the edge! If the whole incubator is full of steam I would do something about it just to help them dry quicker and to make sure they have fresh air.

I'm surprised there's no vent on the incubator. I have a larger version of that type of Brinsea and there's a little round piece to turn on the side.
Thanks so much for the advice. All good now thank god! And all dried out.

4/7 chicks made it for me. So sad to loose 3 but greatful for the 4 others. 1st ever hatch......a little more stressful than I thought when it came to the hatching stage. 😅🙈

Above I my first batch of just green eggs that was a day 4 egg you can see the aircell was too big. I still have 4 on day 15.
Below is the same farm eggs different batch on a day 5

You can tell the air cell is much smaller and a stronger veins.
I set the other eggs even though I knew the air cell would be a problem because I had faith in the farm. But they were sold to eat.
This next batch will be better due on the 30th.

Okay, silly question (sort of) and probably shouldn't even be here (but it concerns my recent hatch), but if the hen is sex-link (black or red) but the roo isn't, will that still mean the chicks can be sex-linked?
Only Info I found:
Of course, mix chicks can have any color variation at will (genetic inheritance). Which in turn means that the identification color of mixed chicks does not have to be correct.

I know someone mentioned Silkies, but my Faverolles (feathered legs) has 5 toes, and I think Dorkings do too!

As far as all black chicks, silkies can be all black, of course Cemanis, and I think Mystic Onyx hybrid from Hopvers is also all black.

Your chicks are beautiful and quite the variety!
My mottled houdan has 5 toes as well!

We never had chicks/chickens before so I never saw regular chickens in detail before. Technically we aren't supposed to have them as our property isn't big enough (if we had an extra 1/2 acre though we would be able to have 100 birds). Several of our neighbors have them, no one actually cares so we decided to go with it.

Googling 5 toed chickens would say that it would likely be a descendant of only a few breeds of chickens (and the feathered feed would also narrow it down). I am curious to see they all grow out. I'll be keeping an eye for a grow-a-long thread.
There is a Feb/March grow along started if you want to join :)

Thank you for looking that up! I tried a few different searches but came up with nothing.
