First baby! Right as I was heading to bed! (Well, ok, I stayed up a bit to watch him/her unzip) 😊

We ended up with 8 chicks! We started with 12 eggs, had 2 quitters, 1 didn't make it out of the shell and still have 1 pekin duck egg that's a week behind. Not too bad!

The one that didn't make it out had a very small air cell and showed no signs of progress past the internal pip. So, last night I made a safety hole in the top of the air cell with a 1/8" drill bit between my fingertips and got a tiny bit of blood. This caught me off guard because I thought that the air cells were the safe zone. I have never had to assist to that level and only clear out the external pips to help them breath better on the past. We had 2 eggs with abnormally small air cells and, thankfully, the other hatched perfectly fine. You learn something new from every hatch! This is dangerous to own an incubator because we now have 2 ducks and 22 chicks! Our city only allows 4 hens so we will be helping out friends that want chickens and maybe sell some to cover costs and get as close to 4 as possible with some chicken math formulas. 🤣🤣🤣View attachment 3428953
Yay! So cute! 22 chicks, wow that's a lot to handle. Crazy times! It is amazing how much dust they generate!

I have the same restrictions. I had 9 chicks (temporary doesn't count in chicken math, right?!) last fall plus 3 hens and that was plenty for me. Now that things have returned to normal I may have one over the line of 4 but I'm sure chicken math says that if they both have black heads they count as one hen.

First hatch from my own flock!!! NO clue who the parents are lol well, I can rule a few birds out due to egg color, at least. Probably not from my NN girls either. I have two cockerels, a SLW and a Bresse. This baby has a straight comb, but that probably doesn’t mean much.

Also, i miscounted my eggs. I thought I had 4 set on 19/2, but actually only two. I have the 4 set on 21/2 going into lockdown. I’m never going to be so chaotic about setting eggs again!!! Lesson learned lol

I haven't been feeling well the last few days with pollen and asthma, but I've pulled 3 and locked down 15.

2 quitters and one that I had been pretty sure was clear but was dark enough to call dubious at the previous candles.

I still can't see anything but the air cell on the olive eggs.

I'll put a picture of my breed baskets up in my next post.
I hope you feel better soon 🙂
