March 2023 hatch-a-long

How do your pullet eggs develop?
I would say mostly okay as far as hatching with some particular pairings much worse than most. I do try to wait till they’ve been laying for a month -ish so they’re not as small. I want to say the smallest I’ve hatched from is 36g, maybe a tad less? I think a bigger part of the issue is that they haven’t been alive long enough to see how hardy they are, and it’s possible some of those yet unseen issues lead to early quitters. I will say some of the smaller eggs seemed to have more late quits.

Wow that’s tiny! I have a few pullet eggs in my hatch (mainly to test fertility), but the smallest egg I set is 48g. All of them have been laying for a few months already.

Day 11- I’m down to 8/20 shipped eggs, mostly white shelled, but two Araucana and one marans are still going, yay! I have a feeling the white eggs will be colored Leghorns(“Italians”) and/or Hamburgs, but I won’t know until they hatch. One egg is small and skinny, it’s developing, but honestly I would never set an egg that looked like that if it was from my own flock. I paid for it tho so I’m gonna see what happens lol. Maybe the breeder packed me a random bantam egg (I did ask for a mystery mix of large fowl, but she added two freebies so who knows?)

Has anyone hatched a small egg shaped like this?

The eggs I set from my flock are from my pullets (July hatch and one Aug hatch) but they have ok size eggs not tiny. But like iluveggers it is more to check fertility. I should have put one of my EE eggs in but I didn't think of it. I didn't weigh mine since I didn't really have time before I set them...

I have a Welsummer with longer, thinner eggs. Her hatch rate isn’t as good and the females I’ve gotten out of her have similarly shaped eggs so I quit breeding her. It could be a one-off from that particular hen and maybe that’s why the breeder felt okay about sending it. :)

Those should be okay, I likewise set some from a pullet hatched in July but she never put out eggs that were little, maybe bc of the shorter daylight of winter and she just came into lay later. Now out of curiosity I’m going to weigh some from these same ladies when I find their eggs in the nest box again (I put them back in general population already).

I couldn't resist candling! My lemon sablepoot eggs are growing nicely at least but looks like all the porcelain poot eggs are empty... think there might be something going on in the serama eggs but too early to tell. Trying to resist ordering more 😬

How old are these? Are you saying this one is empty or one that’s developing? Looks like the latter to me. I would definitely give it more time before declaring any are quitters. I normally wait till 7-10 days to pull any just in case because it can be hard to tell! :)

That was day 4 and yes one that's developing! I will give them another few days for sure with my fingers 🤞
