March 2023 hatch-a-long

Sex links only work for one generation. So even crossing a sex link hen and sex link roo won’t make sec linked chicks. I’m by no means very knowledgeable about genetics. I just know enough to understand that it’s very complicated 😂.

This thread is old but goes into considerable detail.

PERFECT! Thank you! That is exactly the info I needed, and confirmed what I thought.

I swear, I searched on here!

I currently have Call ducks in lockdown in one incubator.

Then I have my Ayam Cemani, Pavlovskaya, bantam Cochin and one French Black Maran egg on lockdown in another incubator.

I should start seeing the Calls soon….fingers crossed!!!

I just need to win a gc then I can get one!!!! Lol
I bought a magic fly candler that I can see great in. I can recharge the one that I bought but they also have one that you can plug into the wall. I don’t have to move mine out from the incubator or have it dark in there either. Just thought I would suggest this too…

Think that is what I have. I still struggle with seeing in when it is light in the room.

Oh ok. I haven’t had a problem yet. I started liking the flashlight that came with my incubator, then it kind went out on me, and then my husband gave me his super bright led flashlight and that was better, but then I found the magic fly and it has been amazing. I hope the next light you get is so much better!

Much respect - that must’ve taken a couple minutes! They are great pictures and such a nice variety! Did I see a little Cemani in there? 🧐
Okay, spoke with guy I got my eggs from and he does in fact have 1 Cemani hen and roo, so I got lucky on that one. Heres the whole list of what he has (free range) so should make for some interesting detective work..

Light brahma (light tan egg)
Easter egger (blue or green egg)
Faverolle (tan eggs)
Bl & Blu Australorp (tan eggs)
Black minorca (white egg)
Barnevelder (med brown egg)
Wh & Br Leghorn (white eggs)
Buff orpington (tan egg)
Silver laced wyandotte (tan egg)
Bl Maran (dark brown egg)
Golden laced polish (light tan eg)
Speckled sussex (tan egg)
Welsummer (med brown w speckles egg)
Opal legbar (blue egg, smaller than easter egger eggs)

Roosters:
Cuckoo Maran
Ayam cemani
Golden Laced polish
Opal Legbar
Buff/Red-leakage Silkie
Silver laced Sebright bantam

Oh wow! Quite a variety of possibilities! It will be really fun to see what you might have 🕵️‍♂️

For those wondering about the egg cartons and/or separating different lines of breeders, here is how I currently do it. It is easiest with two incubators if you have this many eggs but I’ve done it in one with a smaller batch. Just need to make sure only one line is available to run around and keep the others bagged separately. I put the smallest number of eggs possible into the bags since it is harder to monitor what’s going on. One of these is a lingerie bag and one is just some mesh material had from a random purchase at Joann’s a long time ago. Lol I have seen using a produce mesh bag, and then they are basically disposal whereas I do wash and reuse these. I prefer to hatch in paper cartons versus styro but I’ve not noticed any differences in practicality.

31 are in lockdown! I will be getting a mishmash of phenotypes as all but one set are third generation in my project and from here I will be more choosy in my hatching.
