I'm a member in good standing of the "Store-bought Eggs = chicks Club" These are the 5 LF from the 3-3-10 hatch. Heather the Papillon loves to watch them.

The little black one that got shellacked may have to have another bath!

Hello everyone! I am setting up my hatcher today to stabilize it for lockdown on Sunday. I have seen several pics with different setups. I have 2 LG forced air incubators that I am using. In the hatcher, do I set the egg carton with the eggs directly on the wire floor or should I put something like a cloth over the wire. Also, if I do put something over the wire, will it effect the humidity? My hubby works at the hospital and brings home surgical drapes that cannot be used in the OR..(once supplies are opened they are no longer sterile and must be disposed). I thought about cutting one of these drapes to fit the bottom of the hatcher. Any thoughts? Thanks and keep posting pics...I love those babies!

Madcap621 - They are sooooo cute.. but whats "Store-bought Eggs" mean? (I've only had chickens for a year, so I'm still learning lots)

Madcape621 Congrat's on your hatch

lisal124: The wire floor is great for letting circulation thru & something for their little toes to grap on to, but I've had the best experience with that "rubbery" no-slip shelf liner that comes in small rolls with a waffle like pattern. The chicks don't slip on this (which can cause spraddle leg), has holes for good circulation of air & moisture, & is easy to clean up later to use again. Just put your carton (with holes cut out of the bottom) on top of the single layer of waffle shelf liner & over the wire mesh. Maybe the surgical drapes can be used up in the brooder instead of paper towels, etc. I always put down pine shavings or cut straw for cushion, with a layer or two of paper towel, a layer of the waffle shelf liner & a sprinkling of the chick starter feed for a few days until the chicks get going stronger. You're so close. Happy hatching!

Madcap621: Heather's little "sbe" chickies are so sweet! They look so very clean too. Ha!

New chicks have hatched! Congrats to all!

ptig78d: That's the easiest, stress-free way to hatch, while I'm asleep. I try to stay awake or stay home & watch each time, but they often just go on without me. How wonderful.

Deanner03: When you get the chick into the brooder & if you see it going on it's back still without getting turned over easy on it's own, then it may need some support for standing upright. I once used a crumpled up handtowel (or washcloth. The chick was able to stand & rest in one of the hallowed out "crumples" of the towel, it gave it just enough cuddly support so it didn't fall over easy & it was able to get out when it wanted to. I just kept checking on it to put it back into a hallowed spot for safety, until it got stronger. They get trampled too much by the others if they stay on their backs & don't get a chance to work on standing with their legs. Good luck with that one.

NillaBean: Nice group! Thanks for the pics.

gamebirdsonly: 14 Welsummers! Horaaaaah!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have a roll of that shelf liner in the horse trailer. Wonderful idea! The surgical drapes will be great in the brooder, especially since they don't cost anything. I am also using an epidural kit to monitor the water in the hatcher...the tubing is so small and fits right into the egg turner slot. I can add or withdraw water as needed. Recycling at its best!

I'm so excited!

You'll love it with a PC fan! I added one to mine this go-round and it has made all the difference in the world as far as steadier temps and humidity
