Well I had Three out of the first Five hatch and I am very happy. I believe that I have my first two Blue Silkies, the third is a splash. I have been getting alot of them.

I still have five out of six turkeys developing. One was just a blood ring on candling last night. They managed to survive ok with 3 days home alone...I had to leave town on an emergency and could not find someone to come turn them three times a day. And there are 11 more turkey eggs sitting on my counter now...I'll be making Thanksgiving for everyone I know if all these make it!

D'Angelo N Va. :

Well it looks like I am going to just get 6 out of my hatch. I was incubating 19 eggs....what did I do wrong? the 6 look Great! but I don't see any more signs of the others, of the 6 hatched they got out of the shells fine, not defects or anything. I put them in the brooder Sunday p.m. and they immediately starting eating and drinking....so I don't get it. I know the eggs are fertile, I see the rooster on the hens, and they are all just over a year old.

However, As soon as I can get the incubator clean and ready, I will try it again, so look for me again Save the Favs.

Happy to see your have 6 chicks! I find myself saying "what did I do wrong?" on the morning of hatch due date, so I start much earlier than you. There are so many variables that interfere with hatches, it's truly amazing at how many do hatch; so don't beat yourself up, just move ahead like you are & learn as you go. You did good! Looking forward to seeing your posts on the 'APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in'.

cook_kaka_ook: Good pics of your group of hatched chicks! Last year I had an egg that was a perfect oval too & didn't know what to do with it at lockdown. Since then I've learned to shine the flashlight at both ends & locate the air cell for how to set the egg upright for lockdown. Wheeuu! It's always something.

JCoogle: Those are real cute & soft! I've never hatched Silkies.

ChickyLaura: What a very nice surprise!

Catdaddyfro & Madcap621: I have to say that messin' with the incubator equipment is not the funnest part of incubating for a hatch. Persevere!

The Warden: It's the calm before the storm!

ronnie the rooster: Don't know what breed they are, but just wanted to say........Congrats!

Swollen foot?

one of my marans chicks was born with what look like very swollen feet
He came out of the egg with an attached umbilical cord and a small amount of bloody lining.

any suggestions for care or shall I just adopt my usual "wait and see" method of chicken care that I use for all non immediately life threatening issues?

in an unrelated note: we had a small tragedy in our otherwise lovely but very slow hatch. our silky hen took her two hatched chicks out for a walk leaving a half dozen eggs in the nest. She then proceeded to leave the chicks outside while she went back to incubating. they didn't figure out how to follow her and died of exposure. I confiscated her remaining eggs (left her some new ones while I decide what to do) and will find a way to confine her to a smaller area if I decide to let her have the chicks back. Argh!

on a good note
8 marans (+1 pipped)
2 spitzhaubens + 2pipped
2 mille fleur
1 black mille fleur like object - can two normal mille's throw a black chick?
