She/he is crying quite a lot, and starting to move about. Slowly drying off too. The next one out I expect will also be an Ameraucana - Only have two Marans pipped right now, and noone else has budged but all three Ameraucanas. . .

Come on, Marans!!!

Hi Debi Raymond, ME TOO! I am getting ready to candle before locking down tomorrow. Also have to pack for our trip on Sunday. Will take my 'puter so can keep up w/everyone

Other exciting news -- got my first egg [Cochina the 5 month old Cochen pullet] on Monday. Another on both Tuesday and Wednesday, took yesterday off and laid me another this afternoon!

Madcap621: Yes, the first egg of a young hen is so exciting. What a good 'lil Cochin she is! I was so thrilled when this flock of gals started laying, you'd think that I was the one who a laid the eggs.

**Update
Hatch 3/18/10
Bantam Blue Salmon Faverolles
6 hatched
1 more pip
1 pending

Can hardly wait to get home from work to see what has happend since.

Best wishes to everyone with your hatches!

SO................. I candled and have 50/50 going into lockdown for the "traveling hatch".

Of the Speckled Sussex, 5 look great [of 10, 2 clears 1 blood ring and 2 early quitters]

My friend's EE egg - early quitter

, of the 35 Blk Australorps, 21 going to lockdown. 5 of those are very iffy, with quite a lot of clear white still in the bottom. I even thought 1 had a BR, but then realized I could see the chick moving around. Rule reinforced: If in doubt and it doesn't stink, leave it in

So now the waiting begins!

I also candled the 10 Silver Lakenvelder eggs. 3 possible clears but too soon to tell so everyone went into the Suro-20. Since these eggs are white I FINALLY GOT TO SEE VEINING AND SWIMMERS!

Amazing! I was also interested to notice the wide range of development at 6 days. everything from just shows at the top to veining, eyes with veining, Swimmers with heartbeats and shadowy bodies and definate darkening in the middle of the egg. I learn new stuff every time I candle

And just to remind everyone WHY we do this:

Seems like just yesterday [October 17, '09] I was visiting my cousin while they were hatching and they gave me a half-dozen Peeps. Mostly roos as it turned out, but one pretty little black cochin bantam. Now look at me

I locked down tonight, and there are 9 eggs in there that look really good. Out of 20 shipped eggs..... Ok, I guess. I dropped two and one was busted on arrival - there was 1 that was clearly not fertile, so that leaves 7 eggs that were early quitters. Not too bad I suppose for shipped eggs. Though they were all packed REALLY well.

and bless her heart, Reesepoultry, who sold me the polish eggs, is sending more because she likes her customers to be happy, DESPITE the fact that I repeatedly told her it wasn't her fault! GOOD SELLER!!!!!

Looks like my hatch is done, with 1 egg pending. I'm very pleased to have these pure Bantam Blue Salmon Faverolles chicks, sent to me by Henry (Pen #1). It was a "smooth" hatch that took about 24 hrs. between the 1st chick to the last one to hatch, "dry incubation" method used. They are all very fluffy, strong & in the 1st week brooder (which is a 3 gal container, set inside a larger clear plastic container to cut any drafts, a red heat lamp, soft layers of pine shavings, paper towel, waffle shelf liner, ground chick starter feed sprinkled around, a tiny feed container & a tiny water container with marbles so they won't drown). The 2 tiny containers are from a yogurt that has the fruit in the top container to mix into the bottom container yourself (you pay xtra for that privalege your know, ha!). Can hardly wait to see them grow up, but for now, I'll just enjoy their fuzzy cuteness. Fingers are crossed for some nice pullets to go with my unrelated roos, dreaming of things to come. The Bantam Favs are my all time favorite breed, you all know why. They're just so sweet & more!

Here's my 7 Bantam Favs chickies all cozy & warm. Thanks hcammack!
