March hatch along

Hi,

Well my first hatch ever is completed not majorly successful though! I've got 6 chicks out of a possible 18. I got rid of 5 on day 18 which had nothing in. Of the 7 that didn't hatch only 1 was not developed. The others were fully grown. Any ideas why they didn't hatch?

We opened the incubator to get the chicks out and don't notice 2 eggs were pipped will this have killed them? But the others were not pipped at all? They all seemed fairly wet when I opened them.

Feel like I've failed!

You can't count the 5 that weren't fertile, that was the roos fault! lol so 6 of 13 isn't bad for the first time, and 6 more then you had 21 days ago. Opening the bator at lock down is to keep the chicks from shrink wrapping in the shell, so if the unhatched but pipped ones weren't shrink wrapped your opening didn't cause it at all.

I'm not really sure if they were shrink wrapped. Their beaks were not near the air pocked though. Don't know if I dare have another Go at school! Feel bad that so many didn't make it! X

One week from today is my scheduled hatch day, and I will be gone all day.

I used to work in a construction office and kept brutal hours. During that time I monitored my eggs with a webcam. I used Ustream. It's free to get the account and anyone can see it. My kids used to like to show off the hatch at school. I just set my laptop up over by the incubator and point the camera down inside at the best angle I could. I also used rainx anti fog on my glass so the spike in humidity don't fog up my glass.

I'm getting close to lockdowwwnnnn!! Tuesday night will be my last candling. AND we are slammed at work this week so I'm praying that'll keep me occupied!! :D

I just set 30 more chicken eggs, and already have 56 duck eggs going.
A few days before that I hatched out 48 ducklings and 16 chicks.
I thought I was done hatching until my friends gave me some more eggs.
I won't be bored for a while.

Refreshing to hear of some success! :) What was your percentage last hatch? Sounds good but I don't know how many you started with.

Quote: Well, I started with 72 Duck eggs 1 dozen of which were cracked so I threw them out the first week, and then I dropped close to half a dozen while turning them.
So if you don't count the 1-1/2 dozen that were cracked it's a 91% hatch rate for the ducks.
The chickens were about 70%.
