OMG, I can not believe I have Mareck's in my Tolbunt Polish and Cream Legbar juvies. My paperwork states they were vaccinated. Is it possible for birds that are vaccinated against Mareck's to get Marecks? Do I have to put the whole flock down now? I'm at a total loss here. They have the typical symptoms: difficulty breathing, gray eye color, stumbling when walking. Someone help.

I am really needing some help. It looks like my young flock does have Mareks though I won't know for sure until tested. I have questions though. How long must the ground be left unused? Is there anyway to treat the ground? The coop will be thoroughly cleaned with bleach water and will be left empty since the pen will be dismantled. I just need to know what can be done about the ground and if I can use it eventually?

Thanks for any and all help.

One of my vaccinated chicks got Mareks at 6 weeks. It was confirmed by necropsy. I did not cull my other three healthy chicks. Eight months later none of these hens have it. I just introduced three six week old chicks into the flock. They are vaccinated. Hoping they stay clear of Mareks. Anyway, just wanted to chime in as someone who has Mareks in her flock, has no idea where it came from and is trying to manage my backyard flock without culling the healthy ladies.

These guys were vaccinated as well yet I've had 3 hens put down due to an unknown illness. I have another one with a paralysed leg and looks like at least one other sick. I'm going to take the lame hen in for a necropsy and have them test for Mareks. I'm debating about culling the whole flock or wait to see if any of them won't get it.

Well, we put her down and looks like it might have been Mareks. I guess her vaccine didn't go right. Thank goodness these juvies are away from my adult Legbars.

Wow. I am So sorry for your losses. WHere did you get the birds? No vaccine is 100% effective, but that sure is bad luck. From my understanding, Marek's is ubiquitous (meaning pretty much every chicken is exposed to it at some point) but why some birds get sick and other don't..... I don't know.
Hope you get some answers...

I'm at the end of a batch of chicks that were all vaccinated together, and now dying from Marek's or some opportunistic bacteria . In fact this batch was vaccinated twice. I have 1 left, I started with 8.

If it was Marek's it will always be on your property, or at least a few years. There's no way to know.
Could they have been exposed before they were sent?

I recently received a whole shipment of chicks infected with Mareck's from Healthy Chicks and More and there is no cure, nor is there any hope of introducing new birds, as if they manage to survive (very doubtful) they will be carriers for life with this contagious viral disease. They need to revise their name to anything BUT Healthy Chiks and More!
