hi everyone,
i had a chicken we suspect had Marek's disease... not sure... all my other chickens and roosters are in excellent health....what i want to know is there a product i can buy to disinfect the coop... I'm really worried for my flock so if anyone knows a product or way to disinfect I would really appreciate...thanks

If there was Marek's in your flock, they have all been exposed.
The best disinfectant I know of is activated Oxine which kills all bacteria, virus and fungus.

Thank you for the info. on the product, I will definitely purchase it. In your opion, does that mean I shouldn't add any new chickens to my flock. I was thinking of getting more.

I noticed the word suspect. I guess that means you didn't send the carcass to your state poultry lab for necropsy to verify Marek's?
Not all chickens succumb to Marek's. Some lines and even breeds are resistant. It is pretty much all over the world so I can't tell you to get birds or not bet birds. There is no way for me to know what the danger is on your property.
What state or country are you in and we can send you to the appropriate diagnostic lab for future reference.

You can either completely close your flock by not getting any new chickens, get vaccinated chicks/vaccinate any new chicks you get, or breed for resistance. Make sure to not sell or give away any of your birds, even the ones who do not show symptoms. You can sell or give away eggs, but be careful, as Marek’s is spread by feather dander.

I really appreciate your help and advise. No I haven't sent my chicken to the poultry, it's very complicated in the province where I live since I have a very small coop (10 chickens). I have a friend who raises special breeds and been raising chickens for 55 years. She helps me when one of mine is ill by giving me antibiotics or advise on natural healing... when she saw my chicken, she strongly suspected it was Merek as her legs were paralyzed (I thought maybe broken) but she said no... I already had my coop disinfected and quit costly THANK YOU!... but now I'm really worried for my flock as they are really healthy, go out (even in winter) every day. I live in Canada, my Province is Quebec, I live in the country and no one is allowed in my coop, I built a large run for them lately. They are free range Spring and Summer and sometimes I find them in the wood behind my house, which I don't like as there is a lot of fox. I will have to find method for to go free range but confined. When I have a or need advice, I go the 2 sites: Fresh eggs daily or Pioneer Chicks for feeds and natural treats, but Backyard Chickens for diseases and general health care, No body beats them... Yes if u can give me sites where I could refer to for these dangerous diseases or I don't even know if we have here in Quebec... Thank you for your help and attention on this matter, I really appreciate it .... by the way I bought online Oxine AH, waiting for it, just need the equipment for it.

Appearing paralyzed is a good indication.

Here are some options for you.

I believe that in Canada most government labs require a veterinarian to submit a sample.

On the page I sent you for the oxine, there are specific instructions for mixing with the citric acid activator. Follow them closely. It doesn't take much equipment. You need a good gram scale for the citric acid. A clear plastic paint bucket with markings for quart and gallon is helpful.
You'll also need a pump garden sprayer.
A half face mask cartridge respirator is advised.

No problem for protection, I work in a hospital, with the virus we have all we need to protect ourselves... the problem is the critic acid, dose it come with Oxine, I tried to purchase it separately but no success. I will call Dr. John Morris Fairbrother to see if I can sent my next chicken I may suspect to have Merek, because in my region there are no vets who cares for farm animals.

If you get a kit it is oxine and citric acid.

The citric acid goes a long way but I think 1 lb. is the smallest you can get.
It only takes 10 grams to go with 3.25 oz. oxine. You don't have to buy the citric acid from them but it needs to be 99% pure.

I will be getting the citric acid they confirmed with me, it's a kit, I didn't realize it. I really hope the product will help. I will be devastated if I lose my flock. I read a women uses a fogger in her coop with Oxine, and with her chickens in it. I'm kind of skeptic to try something of the sort. But in the dead of winter, how do I apply Oxine to the coop, I'm really not equipped for this kind of disinfection, and I really stressed out! sooo sorry, until I know my coop is disinfected and clean I will be in this state until then. It's all wood, is that ok?
