Marek's Amongst My Flock

I too had a 6 month old chicken (Lakenvelder) come down with what appears to be Mareks disease. She was partially paralyzed and not able to stand on her legs at all. She was always sitting off by herself. I read about a naturopathic remedy on this site using Hypericum that was posted on 2/20/09.
(Thank you MoodyChicken for saving my baby!)

Every other site i visited suggested she be put down. I would like to give hope to others by letting you know that it seems to have worked. Within the week she was able to walk and while still not 100%, she seems to be just fine. She is still a little unsteady on her feet sometimes but she is able to hop up into the nesting box now and the others have quit picking on her.
Everyday i make sure she gets a handful of raw sunflower seeds to keep her strength up.
i want others out there to know there is hope!

I raised 3 from 4 days old. I was told they were vaccinated for Mareks, but learned much later...after all died before the age of 5 months that the breeder had it in her flock. I had added another before I new they had Mareks, but she was a little older and from another breeder.

Eventhough all 3 died, my fourth is now 6 months a healthy. She just laid her 1st 2 eggs. She may be a carrier, but she's not sick, so there is hope. A nasty, nasty disease, though.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's never easy. And on a lighter note, you have very beautiful birds. They are lovely.
