Mareks or Vitamin or AE or Possible Lime Poisoning??**1/16 Video Update***

I think I have it now! If you have experience on this please share.
Now that I can search under walking on hocks (although not completely yet) I have found this posting from 2009.

However, this chick did not come from a hatchery. It came from a very healthy hen of mine.

Avian Encephalomyelitis ???

I think I need to stop reading about chick diseases as I am turning into a Munchausen Mom!

The lime has nothing to do with it.
Agricultural lime is pulverized limestone or chalk. The active component is primary calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate is a ingredient used to increase the calcium level in layer feed.

I don't think it's Marek's but you never know , I would suspect moreso if there were another chick that had the same symptoms. I have always put down lime or Sevin under shavings in a broody coop without problems.

You might want to try B vitamins esp if your chicks are on medicated feed.
If you separate, I would separate two so they have company. And a heat lamp.

I personally have become very suprised over the last few years as to how many chicks get a vitamin deficiency.

If chick has a disease like Avian Encephalitis, they would have had to get it from some chicken, or a mosquito. It's been cold and we have frost in Fla, I would think it's not mosquitos.

Don't delete the thread. It's education for everyone.

After reading many, many threads on vitamin deficiency I believe that is what it is.
Started him on Polyvisol yesterday (2 doses) and a few hours after the first dose he seemed better.
Hopefully when I go there in a few minutes he will be even more improved!!

I freaked out & thought it was Mareks. Jumped the worse too quickly.
Jumped to the 2nd worse (AE) cause I had no idea about vitamin deficiencies.
Wasn't sure at the time if it was AG lime or the bad lime - it was AG lime we used.
(they'll be no stank on whichever fellow took a dustbath in it!)

Seminole - why do you say especially if it's medicated feed? Asking for education - not for fighting!

I guess it is educational for everyone - I just felt so foolish jumping from one suspicion to another but I imagine others go through this too.
I would like to thank all of you experienced folk for helping me out and not being irritated with me.

You're not alone -- I've got a (hopefully recuperating) hen, but I've been online trying to figure out what was wrong with her, which led me to your thread. My first thought for my hen was Mareks, too, but I've been bouncing around to several different possibilities, just like you! This thread was helpful to me, so thanks for posting your thoughts! Hope your chick is doing well.

If the feed is medicated with Amprolium you should use a B Complex supplement because Amprolium is a thiamine (B1) blocker.
When I use Amprolium either in my chick starter or in the adults water I supplement with either Rooster Booster Poultry Booster or Rooster Booster Poultry Cell when the Amprolium treatment is over.

Amprolium = Corid

Medicated feed can block thiamine uptake

*Update* 1/11/12

I've had him on Poly-v-sol drops for several days and just started Sav-A-Chick to the water for two days.
While he has not gotten worse, he is not as well as I would hope. He has improved, but not much.
I guess this takes about a full week tho?
