I am fairly positive I am losing chickens to Marek's. I lost one chicken a couple months ago and then I lost three in the last two weeks. Two of them have shown classic Marek's symptoms and two died suddenly. Before I started to suspect Marek's I picked up 5 chicks. They are about three weeks, now. They were bought from a local breeder that incubated them. They have not been around my chickens. I have not used my normal brooder because it is built into the shelving in my garage and the temps have been too low to keep them warm enough, so they have been in a metal bin in the basement (I don't think the bin has been used for any chicken clean up in the past.) My question is should I still try to vaccinate the chicks? I don't want to throw away money, but I feel terrible not trying to do something to protect them and I am not comfortable with rehoming them now that I believe Marek's in present in my area.
