I have a few Welsummer's hen's that I suspect have Marek's. The Welsummer's are they only breed that has been affected. They quit walking, drooped wings, funny looking eyes, and very weak. I'm not 100% sure, but it has me concerned. I have some BCM due to hatch soon. Because of the high cost of these eggs, I am considering vaccinating them for Marek's.

Does anyone out there vaccinate their birds themselves? We is a good place to buy the vaccine? Is a person with no expirience able to vaccinate chicks with success? What is the oldest a chick can be and still be vaccinated, as I have a bunch of other chicks that have not been vaccinated?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jeffers Livestock Supply is where I've bought my vaccines from. They seem to have the best shipping costs, due to the vaccines having to be kept cold. http://www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=2&mscssid=1W8QSG7W80XF8PW2V9874V65U91F35K6&pf_id=16782&area=poultry
As
for vaccinating your chicks goes, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you suspect Marek's. You have to vaccinate them as day old chicks and it will be subcutaneously so be sure to order syringes.

Good luck with your Welsummers. It might not hurt to go have a necropsy done to be sure that is what you are dealing with as it is a very communicable disease.

I considered a necropsy. It's going to cost me $40 to have it done. I guess with the amount of money I have invested in chicks, it might be a good idea.

Strange thing is that only the Welsummers have been effected. I have other birds the same age, younger, and older in the same building. Only the Welsummers are getting sick. Does this sound odd?
