I'm a new owner of a Heinz 57 variety of hens and a cockerel called Ladyboy as he wasn't keen to let us know what he was for the first six months.

I thought so as well. My smallest hen Bacon went broody but wasn't very good about looking after herself , she left the nest Monday was very disoriented wasn't eating or drinking. The next day she was sitting on her nest with no eggs very depressed looking, she died later that day only 13 months old.

Welcome to BYC. Check out that nest site. Hens leaving the nest and/or dying while setting are frequently caused by massive mite infestations.

I checked for Red Mite this morning and have found some so the hens and Ladyboy has been dusted the coop has been cleaned out and treated. Hope I have started the process soon enough not to lost any more hens.
