marking bloodlines at hatching

I buy small multi colored spiral leg bands. (size 5 more or less)after they start to grow out of them, go to the larger spiral leg bands. Use differant colors to track the bloodlines
good luck (also the plastic tie strips come in differant colors, get the small ones, cut them off when they start to get snug on their legs, and use new ones)

Do you have a source for the spiral leg bands.

I was about to post this exact topic.

I thought about the food coloring, but with markings of a BB Red it might be difficult to get bright enough. I also thought about the little colored tie-wraps, my only fear with that is the wrap getting pecked at by the other chicks and tightened. If I use the tie-wraps I would cut them flush but I have had them tighten on other applications just by bumping them just right. I think I am going to try the colored velcro. I also might mark the legs with food coloring most of my fowl so far have been hatched with yellow legs.

I've used permanent marker to put a ring on chicks legs before, when I wanted a temporary marker (to keep DH from giving the wrong chicks away).

I bought little white plastic baskets, about nine inches by four inches, maybe two inches tall, three for a dollar at the 99 cent store. I put different eggs that I want to keep separated in those little baskets inside the incubator to hatch, with little anti skid shelf liner peice on the inside for them to get traction on and help them after they hatch. The chicks so far have just stayed in the basket after they hatched, long enough for me to separate them into a different brooder box from the other ones.
