What does everybody use to mark there eggs ? Whether it be for keeping track of flipping, when they were put in or what type of chicken is inside. Black Felt, wax pen, crayon, pencil, ball point pen. What works the best and is safe and won't harm the contents ?.

For most of my eggs I use either a pencil or sharpie

I started a thread asking the exact same question a few months ago - everyone told me to lightly mark the eggs with pencil. But then, just a week or so ago, there was another thread where everyone was admitting to using sharpies on their eggs. I've used Crayola Washable markers, with seemingly no harm to the contents of the eggs (it smeared terribly while I was candling though).

I guess if you used a permanent, really fine tipped marker that would be the best. I was more concerned with the pen leaching through the porous egg shell. The little bit of marking that your actually doing on the egg, I would hope wouldn't have any ill effects on the embryo. Just thought I would see if anybody had any experience with the felt marker causing hatches to go bad or any ill effects that they can attribute to the using the marker.

I use a sharpie or a Prismacolor marker - But since I have an egg turner, I only do it to mark what egg is who's. (those ones are from this brahma, and those are from that brahma)

Also, I like to mark which egg I feel is developing and "good to go," which one has a possible or definite bloodring, and which one I actually saw a moving fetus in. ( O's are for development, X's are for bloodrings, and O's with X's in them are that I saw a moving fetus )

I read somewhere you shouldn't use markers.....I can't remember where or why specifically so I won't guess. I use either a crayon or a pencil to write on the eggs. I have a turner so I don't need to mark sides. But I do write on them to keep up with dates and breed.

I use a Sharpie. I don't like to mark up a lot of the shell area since it needs to stay porous so the developing chick can breathe, but I also need to be able to see the mark even if it wears a bit. A Sharpie mark is easy to see for me.

Ive marked pigeon eggs with sharpies and pencils and never had any problems.
