Is there a safe way to mark eggs for identification purposes? Some of my hens are broody and I want to put some fertile eggs on the nesting boxes. I want to be able to identify the fertile eggs from the ones that aren't.

If they are going in my incubator, I use a regular pencil to date and mark the eggs. Those that are put on "watch" if they are not developing right get an "X" on the top. If they are not developing as fast the next candling, they get tossed.

If they are going under a hen, I use a fine tip permanent marker to put a dot on top of the eggs. That way if another hen lays in the nest, I will know which one it is. If you use a pencil for eggs under a hen, it gets rubbed off really easily.

Thank you.
