Maryland Chicken Laws

I just got done printing out the registration form and it asks for basic info like poutry keepers name, address, cell phone, home phone and email address, the location to register where the birds are being kept. It asks you how many chickens you have or whatever other type of birds that you own, if there are any bodies of water on the property such as a pond or stream.
It asks what the purpose of the flock is, auctions, contracted, hobby or pets, live bird slaughter, own consumption, show birds or competitions, etc.
And it asks what were the sources for the birds, were they obtained through mail order or a neighbor, or commercial, etc.

Maryland Dept. of Agriculture contact information is as follows for those who would like to call or email them and ask whatever questions you need to is as follows

phone 410-841-5810
fax 410-841-5999
email address- [email protected]

website is www.mda.state.md.us/animal health (for additional information on other poultry registration.

Something else to look into it says layer flocks enrolled in MDA egg law program and MDA certified flocks have been registered by the MDA. So something else I need to take a look at. I have already owned my flock for months now and didn't know any of this. I have been selling my eggs to a local road side farm stand and they ask me for nothing but eggs because they can't keep them in stock.
Another thing I read about regarding MD laws is that they said that birds staying within the state or purchased within the state is not tested for avian illnesses at all only the ones being brought into the state are tested for this? I will have to dig into this a little bit further. LOL

Hi,
My name is Bob Bailey.I am in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and I'm a newbie on this list. I'm the guy who uses white Leghorn chickens to teach animal trainers how to use behavioral science when training their animals. I will be giving classes this summer in the Maryland area, exact location not yet selected, possibly at one of the many fairgrounds in the State. As you might guess, I have keen interest in the poultry laws of MD. I also have interest in locating as many white Leghorn chickens (well, up to 40) as I can. Thanks a lot for the information.

Bob - I work for the non-profit Maryland Agricultural Rersource Council. We work out of a 149 acre farm in Northern Baltimore County. We are putting together a suite of backyard chicken programs - including a screening of Mad City Chickens in April followed by Chickens 101 in July. I would be interested in learning more about your courses - as we may be able to serve as a location in Maryland.

Cheers,
Bronwyn

Hi, Bronwyn;
I can send you a bunch of "stuff" about the workshops and about my partner, Parvene Farhoody, and myself. Have you been on line to see late information about the course? Dogs of Course, by Dana Creveling, is handling most of the publicity. Do you want me to address this material to you, or to someone else?

Our (Parvene, an adjunct professor, and graduate student, at Queen's College NYC, and myself) objective is to bring the science of behavior, and behavior technology, to those who want to learn how to "change behavior," including their own. We are presenting a series of workshops in Columbia MD. And, we are looking for a "permanent home" for our chickens when they are not involved in teaching.

Thank you for expressing an interest. Let me know where to send the material. It would be good to have a snail mail address as well as an email address.

In speaking with Maryland Dept of Ag. If you sell or donate any eggs at all, you must register in the egg inspection program. It does not matter if you sell from your house , stand , or farmers market all egg sellers no matter need be registered.

The way they see it "wholesaler" or "packer or re-packer" this is the wording that gets it "packer" includes all sales.

reading into regs, under 3000 layer fee is free. it also states that ispections are done at the retail store level and other.
