Hello &
welcome-byc.gif

They are a good heritage breed.
The NHR lay lg brn eggs,
Marans lay lg dark drn eggs ( milk chocolate to dk) and a good dual perpose breed.
The wyandotte's lay a lg cream colored eggs and is a good dual purpose breed
As far as what would be good for depends on what you want.
A dual perpose birds lays well and has a good meat body for eating
A layer is one that lays very well like Aussies (gooziscat has them) have laid 364 eggs a year.
Or if you want a just for fun that will lay small eggs and up then there is alot of them.
Let me know what you are really looking for and I (we) can help you out.
You can reply here and everyone will help you or you can email or pm me and I can give you a list of what breeds will work for what you are looking for and also the breeders that have them.

White is the color I still have most of. lol I had 8... first a cock disappeared without a trace, hen got killed by hawk, hen and her 30 + eggs disappeared... just found some feathers, cock disappeared without a trace in a storm, now my alpha pair, a Pied cock and his white hen have disappeared without a trace, just like the TV show.

I just hatched a new white keet and three Pied keets, plus the three Guinea hens that are sharing a nest are hatching. Have heard peeping, but they aren't getting off nest yet. Don't EVER stick your leather gloved hand into a nest of 3 Guinea hens. Yikes. Lucky I still have a hand.

Thanks though. I'll let ya know when I get Violets and more Blues. I want some Chocolates too. Denis might let me buy a mated pair we heard about. He's an enabler. lol

Oh, the dozen BLRW I got from ya... 8 hatched and 3 are zipping in the bator right now. Not bad. Your Guinea eggs hatch next weekend. A couple were clear, but should get some to hatch. Thanks SOOOOOO much.

On a downside...

I had 6 Peacock eggs in a trusted bator and walked in to check it tonight and it had spiked to 115 degrees. Never happened before. I had checked them an hour earlier. I am just plain sick.

You definitely have a chance with those pea eggs. A spike that you catch right away has less time to damage. Check them tonight for black veining and die off. I know what that looks like

On a good note, hatched out 10 or jumbo coturnix.. they are the cutest little itty bitties EVER. I have a bunch more to hatch next week. AND, I heard peeping coming from my tack barn where I have two turks brooding together in the hay bales. I found one sqooshed... actually smelled him first

so, Im keeping the rest in the brooder (with the itty bitties) until they all hatch out. Miss Ducky is on a bunch of RP turkey eggs too so, I'll scope her today. But, she's got herself waaaaaay back under the carriage house and I cannot reach her... may send in the 4 year old to investigate.. That duck will hiss and scream and throw a fit! ....serves him right for messin with my bator

So, now.. I need to take some pics of these turks and quailies all together.. It is so adorable. The little ones climb all over the big ones. just a pile-0-snuggles

Soaring Chick

Thanks for the great info! I am really enjoying this website and the enormous amount of knowledge everyone has! I am hoping to find two girls to add to my tiny flock at the swap. My Golden Comets are friendly and terrific layers. But 4 is just not enough

. At this point, I intend to have for the joy of it and thier eggs. No plans for freezer food at this stage of the game. The Dominiques are on my list, although I thought I could make the rounds at the swap, meet you all, and learn some more. Adding more color to my nest box (ie EEs) is a fun idea too!
