Hi Liz! Welcome to the list!

The stables are still there but I can't say for sure if they still have the auction. I think they do. My home is not too far from there so I guess I've just grown used to all of the horse trailers coming by my house that I don't really pay much attention anymore. I grew up in Poolesville but my parents met at the auction in 1968! And my dad was going to the auctions well before he met my mom so that tells you how long the stables have been there!

I just got my first baby chicks yesterday. They're Barred Rocks.U have a couple of baby roos if anyone here in MD wants them.

Just wanted to chime in and say hello to all the others from Maryland. Lifetime Bowie resident new to backyard chickens this past Spring. For those of you from around here I would love to know about anything "chicken" nearby like shows, places to buy/shop for supplies, local places to get baby chicks, and anything else you think would be helpful.

We're in the Bowie area (but not in "Levitville" part of Bowie, anymore) We luckily have enough space to escape the PG county zoning nazis. This Spring we finally gave in to our oldest son who has been applying increasing pressure since he was 3 for us to get chickens. That started about 10 years ago. So this April we bought 4 lovely little chicks. 2 white leghorns (Mimi and Kiki), 2 EEs (Fidelia and Pixie), 1 Black Austrolorp (Susan), 1 Buff Orpington (Joy), 1 Rhode Island Red (Audrey), 1 Barred Rock (Maya), 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte (Sally Mae), and 1 Gold Star (Goldie). That's 4 right. 2+2+1+1+1+1+1+1=...........wait a minute I have to go talk to my wife. I think there's been a mis-communication somewhere.

Anyway they are a total joy to have and the eggs are fantastic. We built our coop from almost 100% recycled and repurposed materials. (I had to buy 2 small boxes of screws) We just got our 1000th egg last week sometime and we're wondering why we waited sooooooooo long to give in to our oldest son's demands. They really are our son's birds but they have become part of the family now.

Do you have a sense yet for what you want? If you just want some brown egg layers, you could try your closest feed store. Our local Southern States is going to order chicks from Mt Healthy Hatchery for delivery in late March. It sounds like you can preorder chicks or buy a few in store. They sound like most of the chicks will be spoken for, but there will be some available for purchase. You can give them your email and they will let you know when it is time to place your order if you want to. The varieties offered are the 5-6 most popular. They have the basics as far as supplies. Tractor Supply will probably also have chicks for sale. Their prices for feed might be better.

I was just searching some of the message threads here on BYC for the breeds I like. I'm hoping to find someone in the area breeding the kinds of chickens I like, and hope they will sell some chicks. I don't think I'm up for trying to hatch out eggs yet!! You can search here on BYC by state or by breed of chicken, etc.

There is going to be an Agricultural expo in Harrisburg PA early next month that should have lots of regional poultry. I sure would like to go but doubt I can this year. I think there may be a livestock & poultry auction weekly over near Frederick.
Good luck!
