Thanks! I know what chickens I would get, RIR's, and what coop, but since it is my first time raising chickens, and I would be the only one raising ghem(they are my chickens) my mom thinks it is too much responsibility, and I would like to find out if that is true.

Your mom is probably worried that after the fun of a new pet wears off , she will end up taking care of your chickens. That does happen a lot and your mom has a right to worry about it. You sound very excited about having chickens, and you're right too, because they are wonderful animals. They REALLY do take a lot of work, though, and you will have to be committed to them several times a day, everyday. When you get them they need you the most. You need to make sure the water stays clean (they like to poop in it A LOT),fresh food, very warm temperatures, and cleaning up their messes. After that they go outside and every morning must be let out, fed, watered, coop cleaned frequently or you'll get lots of flies and stink. Cooped up at night. Hot weather means you have to find ways to keep them cool. Winter means you have to grease the biggest combs or they could freeze. REALLY!! Always watching for disease. These are just a few of the things that go into raising chickens. If you think that you can commit to all of that, then maybe mom should let you have some, who knows, maybe she'll end up liking them even more than you do!

gardeningmama,
Thank you for the input, it is very helpful. Knowing this will help me to know if I truly am able to raise chickens, but I think that I will be able to commit to that with a flock of my size (4). Thank you for showing more of the negative side of chickens, everything I read and everyone I talked to only told me the 'best pet in the world, no problem, no work' side of owning chickens. Thank you!

Wait until your Mom tastes what a real fresh egg tastes like! She will be hooked then.
And her baking - what a difference a really fresh egg makes.
You can do it!

Hello Mrs. Robinson!!! Welcome to the Maryland thread, and
welcome-byc.gif
. I grew up on Sharon Acres Rd. Then moved to Jarrettsville, now I'm in Delta. Hop, skip, and a jump from you. You're gonna love BYC. It's my go to source for all chicken info. You can't get any more expert advice than from those who have hands on advice.

Hello Neighbor. By your title I am assuming you enjoy gardening to? My husband tried this new soil mixture with our new raised beds....our plants look like they are on steroids. I course we had to fence them in to keep the chix out.

Oooh, raised beds? I dream of raised beds (rose beds to be specific). I'm aiming for next year, this year I would just love to get the gazebo scraped and painted. I got a beautiful Confederate Jasmine to grow on it, but can't plant it 'till the paint is on. Time is flying this summer. What kind of soil is he using? And where can I get some?

ANYONE GOING TO THE CECIL COUNTY FAIR JULY 21st FOR THE POULTRY SHOW? I'm meeting a fellow BYC'er there for MF Bantam Cochin Eggs. Wanted to see if anyone else would be there that might have another variety (something I don't already have) I could put in the bator with them.

I wish I could go to the fair, but I'm working that day. We will probably go to check out the Frederick fair in September since it goes all week.

We bought the book "All New Square Foot Gardening", by Mel Bartholomew. Its 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 course vermiculite. Mix equal parts of each measured by volume, not weight. We have only had to pluck 2 weeds all summer. It has been wonderful.

I thought I could post a picture, of our 5' tall tomato plant, but I don't think it worked.

Speaking of County fairs, here is all I could find for now.
Who is going to what?!?
The Great Frederick Fair - Sept. 14 - Sept. 22
St. Mary's County Fair - Sept. 20 - Sept. 23
