MARYLAND THREAD!

Hi KLC,
Ordinances can really hamper the right to enjoy chickens.
As suggested, perhaps there is a breed that can be accommodated in a garage or basement. But remember, no roosters - they crow!
I hope you can find a happy medium with your folks and neighbors.
Keep looking and Good Luck.

Howard County - with two cockerals who must go. one silkie/araucana mix and a gorgeous iridescent black cochin. contact me if you want them!

KLC, have you thought about talking to the neighbors about getting a few hens? I think if you can approach them with intelligent conversation/facts you might be surprised. The chicken keeping "trend" is really taking off and there is a lot of interest in the hobby/lifestyle. If you got the ok from the neighbors I think your parents would be more on board with the project. Only the neighbors that can see the birds will know that you have them (assuming you pick the right breeds). If you only have a few birds, they are super easy to keep clean and care for. House chickens aren't bad either. I have a couple of showgirl pullets that come in at night and sleep in a spare parrot cage while waiting for other outside birds to get moved around. Maybe some of your chickenbook (byc) friends can bombard your parents email with the joys of chicken keeping and the benefit of pets for children! Good luck!

hi mothrhen - can't PM at the moment. thx for your note. am in HoCo. two cockerals must go - 12 weeks old - gorgeous! if they go to meat eating homes that is fine with me.

Hmm, small house chickens...that might work! My mom said no to a parakeet, but maybe yes to 1 or 2 small chickens, she knows how much chickens mean to me. Hmmm....

You could try Seramas! They are TINY!! They would make great indoor chickens if you ,say , have a basement that could accomodate a pen and mini coop. They are not messy at all,(no worse than a small parrot) they are just too tiny. I plan on bringing mine in the house for the winter. Tons of personality....
I dont know how i missed this post. Well said!

Anybody going to Frederick Fair next week? We are going to go look and enjoy. Maybe next year exhibit some birds, even though biosecurity makes me all twitchy. I make everyone change shoes and clothes before touching any of our birds after we have been anywhere with other birds.

Let's wake this thread up!
