MARYLAND THREAD!

Hello! Just about to join the fray and get our own flock of chickens... We live in north Silver Spring, near Burtonsville, MD. Any neighbors in the area on here? Would love to have some local contacts with chicken knowledge!

Husband and I are just finishing a beautiful coop... he built it over the weekend. No birds, yet, but hoping to pick up some this weekend, and also hatching a few in the next few weeks.

Looking forward to this adventure!

Oh yes they make a lot of noise. Weird noises too, like a woman screaming. Go checkout some videos on Youtube before you commit to keeping them. But they are beautiful and fun to have as pets. Not low maintenance and definitely not quite and unassuming.

We have peas, turkeys, guineas and chickens. They are all quite loud with different voices. I like most of the sounds, but the guineas are a bit grating at times, and the only ones that seem to know they are annoying and enjoy it.
I suspected that, ill let my neighbor get used to the chicken first. LOL

Or just ask them if they think it would be neat to have peacocks displaying next door. I believe a lot of people wish they had a bit more wildlife in their lives and would welcome any animals that don't present a threat to them or their rest. I don't think peas are as bad as roosters at disturbing the night, but ours are less than a year old and not mature enough to be doing their full range of vocalizations.

We went to the general store today and we left with two more ladies... Clara Barton and Michelle Obama. Unknown bantam

We have all of those and more nearby too. I love them. I remember noticing the noise the first few days we lived here, and I notice them when they sound an alarm at night, but honestly, I'm so used to them I don't hear them at all most of the time. I say go for it!

I'd love to find some Polish chicken eggs to hatch close to Annapolis so I could pick them up, anyone? I have eggs due to hatch Sunday and I will be able to start another batch.

Hi! I like the new house! Any chance you have a set of plans & a supply list? (And a free husband willing to build another one?!? ;-) ) Great job! We are not to far away in Gaithersburg. I would enjoy getting to know other Md. BYC members.
