Mash feed ?

A BYCer posted this. Is this "mash" w/ whole grains added? Is there such a thing?
"My local layer mash is grains, meal & vitamin powder, so there is whole wheat, oats & cracked peas & corn etc."
What I mean is my local mash is cracked corn and peas, but the smaller grains like wheat & oats are whole. Added to this is calcium, fish meal, alfalfa meal & vitamins which are powdery. I have used mash form Nature's Best Organic & you are right, that was like ground up pellets all powdery & one color, no grains visible. So I suppose it depends on what you get. I've seen pictures of mash like Scratch & Peck & that looks like it has more whole grains than mine. I really like the consistency of my feed and have no problem with the girls eating it. They do pick out their favorite grains, but If you do not fill the feeder too fast, they will eat the rest too. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the ideas. I will have to find one of those old feeders. I plan to use this mill because of the costs savings. I live two blocks from a local co-op but the williness of this other mill to bring bags of feed to my area for no delivery fee if I just go to a nearby farm where they are bringing feed is too much not to take advantage of it.

They beat everyone's prices by 3 to 4 dollars a bag and they are so nice at this other mill.

They are on Ebay, but I'm sure they are sold elsewhere as well. I don't like the tumbling bar type, which most places, nearly as well. They older style with the wires really help when feeding any feed, but especially when feeding the economical mash.

Mash is an old fashioned word. It is merely coarse ground feed. Not quite as fine as people think. But, since it is ground fresh and mixed and bagged locally, yes, it's "dusty", although flour coated might be a more accurate expression.

Thanks very much to both of you for trying to help me out. I buy crumbles or pellets and am trying to get the details on the lingo which, I must say, seems a bit squiggly.

I will master this! I may be 102 when I do, but I will get there!

Mash, I found I can get 100 pounds of Mash from the local Co-Op for the same price a crumble at TSC. So I started buying it. As you have heard from other posts your birds may waste some, mine would brush is out looking for corm or oats ect… So I was sending a lot to the compost pile. Then I saw a post on BYC about a guy who feeds it wet by adding warm water or yogurt or cottage cheese. I tried warm water first from stuff under the feeder, Gone. I have added yogurt, cottage cheese, Ra-man noodles and grave, all gone. It is cold now but the birds eat it wet w/o waste. I would like to tell him thanks but can’t find the post, he saved me some $$$.
