mason jar chicken feeders, how to refill without spilling?

Another good tip is to get a large plastic colander (got mine at the dollar store) and keep it handy to dump the waterer into to keep the shavings and other debris out of your drain.

It looks just like this, but in a lovely purple color.

If you have the quart jar type chick feeder here is the best way to use it.

1. Get a plastic jar for it not a glass one.

2. Cut the bottom of the plastic jar open which when upside down is the top of the feeder.

3. Now drill a hole near the top on each side and put a short rope through so you have a handle and can hang it an inch off the ground....now you won't get as many shavings in it and they won't dump it over either.

4. Now you have a small top fill feeder.....just fill it from the top with a cup and you can fill it really really full.

Viola......problem solved.

P.S. this does not work for waterer only for dry feed type.

Here is an example see in the back right of the picture what I did to make mine fillable from the top. It also usually hangs on a hook on the side of the brooder.....much easier to fill and keep clean.

Also to the left you will see my chick waterer. It is made from an Oxyclean container and 2 chicken nipples and I hang it next to a quart waterer and after they learn to drink from the nipples I remove the quart waterer because it's ALWAYS full of shavings and poop.
They learn to use the nipples on their own just out of curiosity.
