Let me start by saying I am a BAD caretaker.
I have 10 chicks that are about 4 or 5 weeks old (unsure...they are in the ugly but feathered stage). They are in a newly built outdoor brooder with automatic feeder and waterer. It has been raining like crazy here so I checked the brooder after a couple of hours to make sure there were no leaks. All was well.
Jump to this afternoon. I asked my daughter to feed and water the chicks while I ran an errand. Apparently the brooder flooded! The chicks had dried themselves under the lamp but look horrible. The pine shaving were soaked and there food had been covered with the shavings. DD gave them new food and water and waited for me to come home. When I went to start the clean up I noticed the chicks had gorged themselves because they were so hungry.
Their crops are huge! I removed their food and am hoping they will be ok.
Is there anything I can do to prevent them from becoming impacted? Bread and olive oil? I am kicking myself for not looking in on them earlier.
