I always enjoy Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall. I avoid driving there too. Have fun!

Great town - Bean Town. I would definately agree with Prior postings about things to do. Definately take the "T" to get around. Its much easier than Nyc to get around. Ther are alot of things happening, Check out the North End for Graet Italian food. La Picola Vinezia on Salem St. Is fab!!!! There Is lots of info in the Net at Boston WEb sites.

I agree with what everyone else says. Be prepared to freeze your pancreas. Wear layers.

Take the T whenever possible.
I'd suggest the Freedom Trail, but it's gonna be way to cold/slushy and yuck.
Fanueil Hall
Rockport/Gloucester/Salem are lovely and north of the city.
Plymouth is south of the city and historical too.
New Bedford has the Whaling Museum.
Fall River has Battleship Cove.
Quincy has the USS Salem and it's the City of Presidents.

Okay I seriously think I am just going to print this out and take it with us to Boston.
Thank you all sooo much! We will not be driving (especially after reading this) I figured February would be the worst time but it fit in best with our schedule. We may make another trip out there in September if all goes well.

I am all for visiting the little towns. Justins parents will be leaving when we arrive so I figured spend 2 days with his sister and the baby and then travel around so that she doesnt get overloaded by visitors.

I am MOST DEFINITELY looking forward to the food!

Thank you all again! I feel so much more ready for the trip now.

People who just don't like cities really ought not to post about what to do in cities. Don't be freaked out. You could get someone to say all the same negative stuff about any city but that doesnt mean there arent wonderful people, sights to see and places worth visiting. Sheesh.

PM me if you want info on excellent ethnic restaurants, children's museums, cool stuff other than tourist traps and traffic, which one can find anywhere.

Also there are a bunch of us on BYC who live in Western Mass, which is not far at all - two hours max, the state is dinky - and more akin to how you picture Vermont or upstate NY.

So feel free to PM for info about Western Mass too, if you like winter hiking, bookstores, college towns, tiny white churches with town greens, gay marriage, gorgeous whitewater rivers, excellent contemporary art museum, maple syrup or any of our other finer exports.

Humorously, I'm heading to California for MY sister's wedding right around when you're swinging thisaway. Have a great trip!

The museums are cool as is Quincy Market and the science museum. There are interesting things to do outside the city too, depending on how far you want to go. For instance, Worcester (45 miles west) has a great art museum, and between there and Boston there are other places like the Nashoba Winery (if you're into that sort of thing). You need one of those tourists maps of the state when you get there.

My favorite outside Boston destination is Plimoth Plantation which has chickens, by the way....if you stay want to do things within the city Harvard University has many great museums with low ticket fees.

Harvard's Glass Flowers Exhibit is world famous!

My dh works in Harvard Square. I LOVE going in to visit him. So quirky.
I suggest the Museum of Fine Art. Easy to get to and very nice.

If you come out to do some skiing or such at Mt Wachusett let me know. I am practically right down the street from there. Can see the slopes from my horses barn! Gorgeous view out there.

I agree though. Take the MBTA. Try not to drive. And Feb is tough here weather wise. Icky. My sister is due with her baby the beginning of March. Good thing they live close to the hospital she is delivering at.

And yes, the beaches here stink. I miss the beaches of NC so badly.
