Massachusetts!

I live 20 miles west of Boston. I would love to connect with some MA chicken lovers.

I have 5-7 weeks old chicks. We hatched 1 Salmon Faverelle (he/she is the only one of 7 to hatch). When we only had one hatch, I made a mad dash to Salem, NH and purchased 3 barred rock 'hens' so my hatchling would have some friends. I am relatively certain the rocks are girls. We hate to give up our salmon as he is our only and first hatchling and my daughters are VERY attached.

I am starting to worry that my salmon is a cockerel based on the really dark feathers that are growing in.

If he is, in fact, a he, I will need to find him a home. He is hand raised and is sweet. I would love to find him a good home where he can have his own harem.

I am hopeful that this community can help me identify a potential new home for my likely boy.

It's nice to read that there are other MA chicken keepers!

At 7 weeks the sex should be obvious. I can tell mine by 2 weeks at the latest. Where did you get the eggs? If from certain hatchery stock it's possible to have really off colored pullets. If you can post a picture I can let you know what I think.

This is Marsala. I sure hope she is a she!
I appreciate you responding.
I ordered the eggs from My Pet Chicken and they shipped from North Carolina.
That is all I know about their origin.

What are the characteristics that makes him a he? Dark feathers and ???

As you live in MA, an suggestions for rehoming him?
The dark feathering and overall mottled appearance. Only a cockerel would be so messy color-wise. Black in the leg feathering. His comb is getting a little color too. Pullets would have some tail feathers by now.

You can try listing him here, or on craigslist. Or in your local feed store. Unfortunately I can't think of any other outlets. My extra males wind up in the freezer.

I am looking at buying a few silkie pullets or hens. I was going to get them as chics until I realized that I wouldn't know if they were male or female until atleast 3 or 4 months old. I'm in the Blackstone/Millville area and have laying hens already. Just wanted a few to add to the flock. I'll be getting a few different breeds as chics, but really only want female birds. Also a price range for them? Thanks
