Material for nesting boxes

Hello everyone --
I am new to this just starting my first flock. Was wondering, can pine shavings be used for the nesting box? I live in Vegas and getting hay isn't easy for such a small flock. I really don't havea good place to store the bale. Thanks.

That's what I'm planning on using. Although I will warn you they will drag every bit of it from the boxes for a while. Mine think I put it there just to play with LOL

We use straw just now, cuz it's what we had. Six chickens, 2 nesting boxes and they ALL use the same one! Some like it pretty bare and some like it over-stuffed...they're constantly "rearranging the furniture" in there, LOL

if you have access to shredded paper, you can use that too.

I cut hanging plant liners for wire plant baskets (I think they are coconut fiber) to fit my nest boxes. I screw them in with short self tapping screws so the hens can't pull them out.
