Material for run???

Im looking to start building my first chicken coop and I was wondering what you guys use as your run wire (chicken wire) or fence material. I looked at my local store at a huge selection of chicken wire. The cheapest there was 7 bucks for a roll not of a size I would call big. For a run that will go right level with the roof of the coop about 7 feet high fenced on 3 sides (coop on one) that would cost me a fortune. Any other ideas???? Thanks!

when I was a small boy, my dad took a bunch of wood lathe and wove a nice fence from it.. the fence lasted for many years.. it cost virtually nothing.. Dad got the lathe for nothing.. it looked like a huge picnic basket..LOL

I was lucky enough to find some 6' tall chain link fence for free. This stuff is the extra heavey gage as well and it made a wonderful run. I also caught landscaping timbers on sale for $1.98 ea and used them for post. After putting this wire 6" deep in the grounjd it made a super safe run for my chickens. You might try your local newpaper or trade paper.

We have a Freecycle in our are that produced an additional 70' of chain link for my yard fencing project.

Interesting is "lathe" a tool or the name of the material used? Also if it was a huge picnic basket could you see through to the chickens?

The chain link fencing I used was just metal. I dug a 6 in deep ditch with a narrow pick from post to post. I put the post about 7-8' appart and tamped in the post tight.... then pulled the fence kinda tight with our 4 wheeler lol.... so it wouldn't sag.

cool thats exactly the kind of thing im looking for. Is 6' a standard height for that or did you just happen to come across it?

A lathe is a tool used to turn and shape wood...

6' is a standard height but remeber I do have 6" of that in the ground.
