Actually, if I understand correctly, the 'lathes' that are being referred to is not a wood turning machine although that's the same spelling. The wooden lathes were originally used underneath old plaster in Victorian(and some later) houses, before plasterboards were ever thought of. So, I can just imagine the old guy weaving them together as they were quite thin pieces of soft wood.
