Mating ??????

I have 12 week old RIR 13 ladies and 1 roo, just wondering when they will start to mate? Do they wait until they start laying??? I was just wondering because I have a few banty roo's that are a year old that tried mounting the ladies a few weeks ago with no success the girls just ran and yelped the banty's soon stopped trying

Each rooster matures at a different rate, but they won't necessarily wait until a hen is ready to lay to attempt mating. My two roos have been trying since they were about 12 weeks old. Now at almost 19 weeks old, I have a few hens, my biggest ones, that are finally starting to submit. Before this time the hens fought hard to get away, now these larger ones are squatting and they actually hold out their wings for the roo to stand on.
