Matted horse tail? - What can I do???

My friend and I just rescued an old QH gelding and his tail is heavily matted, what could I do for him? Should I cut off?

Cut vertically if you do

Lots of mineral oil

IVe cut before with mats. If you're going to do it, Id do it now so he has time to grow it back in time for fly season.

I was gonna say I'm a big fan of cowboy magic, but someone beat me to it! I just use a bunch of that stuff and I re-apply as necessary.

I like the cowboy magic too....lots of it & work on small sections at a time.

I've also used cowboy magic in my own hair. I looked up the ingredients in that and a very expensive hair product my family used to buy and realized both contained the same exact things, except cowboy magic was a heck of a lot cheaper!
