Mature eggs

Hi everyone,
Im wondering if any one knows about the eggs of mature hens having a ceramic texture too it. My chickens are about 5 years old and one chicken has been laying eggs that is white and half of its discolored but if you tap it - it sounds ceramic. Im wondering what this could be from. Also when should i expect my girls to stop laying? Thank you

(Just to make sure... you're certain that isn't a fake egg correct?)

Older hens can have more problematic eggs, whether they're thinner shelled or unevenly pigmented, as laying takes a lot out of them and they're no longer in prime condition, and their reproductive system might not be working as well as it used to.

As far as how long they'll lay for, some older hens continue to lay sporadically their entire lives, though usually with a little more decrease in duration and amount each year. Others hit "henopause" and eventually stop laying.

Hi thank you for getting back to me. No fake ones in the coop. I was collecting them today and noticed that one of the eggs shell has been really odd from the others. It’s usually half faded or stained discoloration. I wish i grabbed a picture of it. It was strange and i just tapped on it to compare to the others. It sounded hollow but a ceramic tone to it. So weird. Then one of them layed a small little egg the size of an m&m!

Ah! A fairy egg, I love these! Usually laid by older hens about to quit laying, or by maiden hens just getting started. Put it in a safe place where it won't break and the insides will dry out naturally. They make good keepsakes IMO. Also called rooster eggs, wind eggs and fart eggs!
