MAY 2016 "Land of the Free Because of the brave!" Hatch-a-Long Hosted by, Mike & Sally

I candeled my eggs yesterday, I've given up trying to candle the Marans, and just do a sniff test at this point. It would be particularly horrible to have one explode in the bator with 31 twelve year olds in the room. Then again, maybe I wouldn't notice the smell after all!

I'm hoping for some OE and BCM to grow out. In the meantime I'm trying to decide what to hatch next...

I am on day 3 and my shipped Bielefelder eggs are not looking good. The rolling air cell one is much improved, but still moves a little. I have another one like that too. The air cells on those two are way too big also. I think I will most likely just toss those 2.

There are a few others where the air cells seem large also, and only 1 or 2 that look good. (I only have 6 in the bator). Does this mean the eggs might be old?

I am hoping the broody's eggs are doing better, but I can't really check because she is hard to reach under her bush. I tried to give her the eggs that looked the best, so hopefully she will have better luck.

I have heard that Bielefelders can be hard to hatch, we'll see how this hatch turns out!

Ugh, my last baby (that I accidentally started to eggtopsy 2 days ago,) was doing so well and looking so good. It was nice and moist, and not over moist. I could watch it breath, the veining was going away, and it was starting to peep. A half hour later, I looked and everything stopped. It was dead. I took it out of the shell and the egg sac was completely absorbed, and it was ready to hatch, but it died for some reason. I just don't get that. It was so close.

I'm not super proud of this hatch, but at least I got my special little silkie chick that was so important to me. The end total was: Hatched 3 rocks, 2 blue silkies, and 1 very special Princess Silkie!
1 silkie and 2 rocks died in shell. And, 1 more silkie died w days after I accidentally eggtopsied it.

I was going to clean the incubator and set my other eggs into lockdown last night, but when I candled them, the chicks look small. My records show that I set a couple a day or two later than the rest. Luckily I have them marked. I also checked my thermometers. Sure enough, I have 4 of them, and they all say different temps, with a 10 degree range. The worst part is that they also jump up and down. One jumps up, then another jumps down. Three are brand new, and there are 3 different kinds. That just doesn't make sense, but it does explain things a bit.

I also need to find the thread about raising the incubator temp again. My thermometers seem to be running low overall, so I am going to up it a bit until I can get some new thermometers. Any recommendations on type? I have the Acurite ones from Walmart, and then a cheap hygrometer/thermometer from Amazon, that always seems to be way off, and another oldie with a wire cable for inside and outside temps, that seems to be the most accurate when using the inside monitor part.

This next batch is supposed to hatch on Tuesday, and I have more eggs sitting on my cupboard (I am turning them) that are on Day 9 after collection, waiting to be set. I wish I had time to run for thermometers today, but I have to finish my Teacher Effectiveness assignment.

Oh no, so sorry you assisted baby didn't make it. :(

Is your next batch silkies? I have some whites that I got from Texas, they are looking good, and some splash silkies from MO..not looking so good. MO. is usually a really good place to get eggs from..for me. ?? Good luck on your next batch. Mine are actually due June 1st..so guess I can't count them as a May hatch, unless setting them in May counts. ??

Ha! Maybe someday there will be a contest for the back half of a chicken instead of head shots! Butt photos! Cute. :) Made me smile this morning.

My little lonely baby is hatched! Still in the bator drying off. It's buff, with an EE comb. Dad was an OE, mom is a RSL. No green legs, but that's funny that the comb is different in a baby that will probably look more sex link. It's coloring isn't as dark as the mom..mom is red. This is going to be a pretty buff color. Will get photos when..she.. dries up.

I have brahma in the bator waiting for me yet lol

these I took out late last night

love us Legbars

Good luck! I wouldn't toss unless weren't developing.

Only 3 of 7 eggs survived to lockdown. Fingers crossed for a healthy first hatch soon!
I hope the 3 hatch!
