May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Little cochin has curled toes and splay leg and is much weaker than the other chicks. I've put boots on it and a hobble. I think its leg issues have prevented it from getting water. I've given it some drops of nutridrench to the side of the beak as well as water.

Aww I'm sorry! Nutridrench is a great vitamin supplement and I use it personally but I would get a multivitamin with riboflavin because foot and leg issues are often related to b2 deficiency. Poultry Cell by rooster booster is a good one or polyvisol without iron is a liquid infant vitamin that is also good.

Was this chick stuck in the egg for an extended period of time before hatch?

Baby #1 is out! This chick is actually from the second egg that started zipping. We walked away for what felt like 2 minutes and out he came! And now a third egg is zipping and chirping.

Wonder how she would get the chicks down 😂 Chickens sometimes are so smart they make stupid decisions.

Most of mine are now laying eggs in the nice nesting box I bought so that’s an improvement. I haven’t seen any go broody. I’m shocked my 2 year old Cochins haven’t.
One of my cochins has been sitting for a couple weeks. I took two eggs away from my broody turkey hen because a bunch of chickens were playing keep-away with a dead poult. 😡😡😡 She had three that made it all the way to today, two now. They're in the incubator with the second batch of goose eggs. One internally pipped, the other externally, so the waterfowl humidity should work well for them.

I tried putting broody turkey in a nice tractor with nesting boxes and a couple turkey eggs, but she wasn't having it. I guess I'll give the poults to my cochin when they hatch, which they likely will do tonight. We'll see how she does.

Meanwhile the geese are jointly sitting on 4 clear eggs and 3 that look like being about a week or week and a half along. But they've been sitting for nearly a month. 🤷‍♀️ Or at least one of the two has. The third goose doesn't seem interested in the project except to join the gander in threatening life & limb of anyone who walks by "their" door. I am debating on presenting them (middle of the night) with the five developing goslings in my bator once they hatch. Not sure I trust them, but you gotta give them a chance sometime I guess--if you're ever going to. If the other three are still going by then, maybe one of themmwill take them on, or maybe I'll incubate them.

I really and truly haven't a clue what I'm doing.

I think i had my set date wrong for my welsh harlequin eggs. Because we are 5 days over hatch and still no pips. But there is movement and air cell development. So I am hopeful to get a hatch out of these eggs still.

My Aztec egg candle at day 7 looks good. No new quiters so I have 15 eggs all showing some strong veining activity.

On the chicken front I think I am going to buy some eggs from a few people online. One has Brahama x Amuracana eggs, Which are two birds I like. Then there are the lavender Amuracana that I have seen that I like. All nice small pea combs. i still like the Death Layer but right now they seem a bit more expensive to get into right now.

I have some rooster booster, but not the liquid kind so I don't think I could get the chick to take it just yet. I'll look for poultry cell tomorrow if the chick makes it through the night, though. It's in the incubator with the other eggs and one of its calmer hatchmates for company. It was getting trampled in the brooder 😔. Hopefully it makes it through the night. I'll be keeping a watchful eye on it and doing what I can, but if there's no improvement in a couple days I will cull to end any suffering. It won't even open its eyes.
