May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Some ducks :) it is my first time hatching ducks and I know hatching times can vary between breeds, but I'm hatching Khaki Campbells which I thought were more "normal" in terms of hatching around day 28. I will try to be more patient!

The air cell drawing down us a good sign though! That either means they internally pipped or are about to. Day 29 I'm assuming you're hatching ducklings or turkeys maybe?

If temps were a bit low at all it can also delay hatch. Waterfowl can be extremely slow to hatch as well even if they "start" to hatch on day 28 it's not uncommon for them to take a couple days, sometimes up to 3 days from internal pip to zip. Hopefully you will start to see some activity soon!

Candled my OE eggs this morning (day 7). Removed 2 of the more blue eggs that I could clearly see are clear. Saw veining in 3 eggs, and have 2 that are questionable (I can't tell if I can see veining in the double yolk one or if I'm just overly hopeful, and the other is a greenish tan egg that is hard to see into). I will leave the 2 questionable ones in a couple more days and check them again.

Moved my oldest chicks (4 weeks in a couple days) from the tank brooder in our shop out to the chick pen in the chicken coop yesterday evening. Hopefully, with a heat lamp in the chicken coop and a brooder plate in the chick pen, they stayed warm enough. It is currently 41 degrees here at the moment with a chance of rain - dipped down in the low 30's last night. I'm procrastinating on going out to do chores. Woke up to a very cold house (the control panel went out on our AC/Heater last Thursday and can't get the parts and repaired until tomorrow at the earliest) and not excited to go outside. Have a space heater going and a fire started in the fireplace to help warm up the house a bit. Going to be cold in the house tonight though!

Hatch update: most of the chicks hatched yesterday, right on time on day 21! It was a lovely Mother’s Day present! I left them in the bator until this morning then. There was one more BCM still zipping and the BCM in general were a bit behind the OEs... I did a very quick candle of remaining eggs: 1 OE and 2 BCM. The OE was a late quitter. So, out of 13 OE, we had 11 hatch, with one early and one late quitter! I absolutely adore the OE babies with their fat little cheeks, and 1/2 are blue. I love blue birds!!!:love They are all so cute and cuddly! So far, we are doing a horrible job of viewing these chicks as “food” rather than as pets... :th

Of the BCM, 9 were set, and 5 have hatched. I just don’t seem to have very good luck hatching BCM, whether they are shipped or bred by us. What gives??? If there are no pips, I’ll open from the aircell tonight and see if they are alive or try to figure out what went wrong...
