May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
This is the first hatch along I have participated in. It is my second hatch. Eggs went in on the 6th, 41 barnyard but most are green, blue, olive colored eggs there. Some mix of Maran, Ameraucan, Arracauna, English Orphington, and Leghorn.

Also tossed in 12 from my girls, my Wyandotte roo is finally getting busy. Blending him with production reds and barred rocks. Most interested in what the barred babies will look like. Learning the joy of hand turning the last twelve.

We should be hatching on the same date!

I've got eggs in the turner to set on Monday, which will put them for a May 4th hatch day. I told myself I was taking May off, but Mom told me I would be stupid as there is a demand and people contacting me to see if I have more chicks yet.

I broke my cardinal rule with lasts months hatch. I normally don't sell chicks until they are fully feathered out and no longer needing heat, but I gave in because of demand.

MH eggs arrived this morning!View attachment 2092594 They are resting now. I might just get them incubating tonight instead of waiting a full 24 hours. I'm impatient lol. I wasn't expecting amazing eggs, but I can tell just by looking at some of these eggs that they are super porous. One of the CCL eggs has some hairline cracks in it, so I might try to nail polish those and see what happens. The welsummer egg is so beautiful, though 😍 I wish I had gotten more of those instead of the speckled sussex..I have some speckled Sussex chicks right now and honestly most of them are jerks.

I'm debating which eggs I should give to my broody. Anybody hatch shipped eggs with a broody before? Is it easier than the bator? Gah. Maybe candling before setting would help.

What are MH eggs? I'm looking through your post history trying to get a clue 🤔
Looks like a great variety!

I have two welsummers that free range (one is my avatar) and they're so entertaining. They are my oldest hens with such big personalities.

Meyer Hatchery, sorry! Some people around here abbreviate it and others don't. I'm a bit of a lazy typist lol.

I am kicking myself for not getting more welsummer eggs! Sigh. Maybe next time.

Got the Svart Hona eggs bought (my daughter wants them for 4-H with her Silkies). Looks like Call Ducks will not be in this next round of eggs....decided on Svart Honas for my daughter, D'Uccles and Gold Spangled Appenzellers (My son's choice for 4-H...we didn't know they had Gold Appenzellers when we bought the Silver, and he would rather have gold), and some Delawares for me. That should fill up my Hovabator and run over into my Janoel. Hubby will be thrilled. LOL! As long as I can sell my extras we will be okay. Maybe Calls will be in the next round.

Like everyone else it seems I have "hatch fever". I am relatively new to BYC, and I am enjoying very much! I have only had chickens for a little over a year. Once I got the first 3 I was hooked! I did my first solo hatch in January, my 2nd was Easter weekend, and I just put a dozen more in the incubator along with a dozen for a friend. Thankfully babies don't take up a lot of room! I'm trying to sort pullets from cockrells in my 11 week old group and don't seem to be making much progress. One day I think most are pullets and the next day I'm not sure! Maybe by the time the May babies hatch I will have figured it out!
