May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Three healthy ducklings.
One with umbilical hernia. Was malpositioned, prolly due to the huge saddled air cell. He is in a coffee cup wrapped in a paper towel, in a bowl of warm water and loosely draped over all to keep him warm. I think he will die, but not ready to take away his chance yet. He worked so hard, poor little guy. I couldn't leave him in the incubator; the others were nibbling at him.

Hi All, I was in several hatchalongs last summer and want to join the May hatchalong! We have 18 BCM and OE (BCMx Ameraucana) eggs that have been in an incubator for 4 days. We expect low fertility as we have a new clumsy roo that just joined the flock of 16 hens, so we put more eggs in than we want and hope to just set the developing eggs under a broody hen. Our hens have been so so broody, for 1.5 yr, so I figured one would be broody any day, in spring, with a roo, plus I’ve put 11 ceramic eggs in a next box. I’m starting to sweat bullets that we have no broodiness in evidence!!!

I said I wouldn't hatch again for this year... then something got our rooster Mr.Sparkles yesterday. Now I'm on a mission to try and hatch some eggs from this week to keep a piece of him going. Mr. Sparkles was a jerk on a good day to people, but he danced and took wonderful care of his hens and ended up giving his life for his girls.

What breed of ducklings are they again?

Some mixed, some Anconas. The sick one is a mixed one. Other than that, there're two Anconas out and one other mixed one. One or maybe two were still unpipped last time I checked. They take so loooong.

Mine would take 72 hours from external pip. So frustrating lol.

He was a looker! Barred rock? Our first accidental roo was a BR... And he was a huge jerk.

I'm counting down to Monday - afternoon is lockdown time, so day 21 is late 30th into the 1st. I've been reminiscing this morning about these peeps from last fall's hatch, I'm hoping for a similarly fun variety of colors again this time:

Quail, ducks, and chicken...

Be careful with the quail eggs in the regular chicken egg turner. My friend ended up buying quail rails and just switched out one row so she could incubate them with the chicken eggs. Sometimes the little eggs are just the right size to get stuck in the ventilation hole in the bottom of the chicken egg turner, just FYI.

I'd rather have a hero rooster than a friend.

Sometimes the little eggs are just the right size to get stuck in the ventilation hole in the bottom of the chicken egg turner, just FYI.

Not sure any are stuck right now I can pull them out. These are fairly large. I didn't put any of the smaller ones in yet.
