May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I got eight heathy chicks! One died after it hatched and another in the brooder. The rest were DIS. Looked like they were too big to hatch. Might raise the humidity earlier next time. So 8 chicks out of 16 eggs. I'm ok with that because I really don't have the room, but chicken math got to me and made me put in too many eggs...:idunno

This morning is day 4.5 (ish) for my shipped eggs. All 9 look like they're developing right on schedule! A few of the air cells aren't quite right (saddled, loose, etc.), but so far, so good. I was planning/hoping to get at least a 50% hatch rate. Looks like I might end up with more chicks than I intended! Go figure.

Have you guys heard of the concept of nail sexing? It works in exotics and flying birds idk if it does chickens but I would think so. Someone here with known genders could give it a shot and let us know maybe lol. I’ve done every bird I know DNA on in my aviary and it’s matched up. Check it out
If this works on chicks, it will be AWESOME!

Good to know! I went ahead and plugged in another incubator so I'm not taking chances with the peachicks. I wiped off the worst if it. Surprisingly all but 1 of the turkey eggs seems to rotate just fine in the NR360 turner. So I guess I'll need to mark the one that just coasts on top to hand turn it.

I'm really bad at NOT setting more eggs. 😅
I thought for sure I was ready to store all but one incubator...I have 3 running again. Hahaha!
They're really small hatches though! Lol
I just fired up my third incubator yesterday. I have over 2 dozen silky eggs from my girls from this last week and it just kills me to let them go to waste. Also getting some more barnyard mix eggs from my neighbor. :idunno My hubby is in the process of building me a new brooder. Its going to be 8' x 4'.

My first hatch I had several die in the Shell as well. After reading up on it I decided it was too much humidity during the first 18 days. I starting doing dry incubation (adding no water until lockdown) and my hatch rate skyrocketed. I live in mid. TN where it's quite humid to begin with.
My current batch is running at about 40-41% and the few I've looked at seem right on track.

Sure! I'll give it a try once the Marans hatch. We used to do this with pregnancies to see if we were having a girl or boy. It didn't work for that. Lol
I sure hope it works . It mentions flying birds and I think they sort of can fly right 🤔

right I’m gonna be stoked if it works right for any of my birds especially my doves
