May 2022 hatch along

I just set 12 buckeye and 16 lavender ameraucana eggs. These were shipped & the ameraucanas are pretty dirty but we’ll see how they’ll do.
those are some seriously dirty eggs. whoever you got them from should be ashamed. If I had no choice but to incubate them I would have damped a paper towel with peroxide and tried to get as much off as possible in the hopes a few would develop and not become germ bombs.

I’m going to join this HAL! I decided to test the fertility of my Olandsk Dwarf chickens (I bought a breeding group mainly for fun and keeping a heritage landrace going) and popped 13 eggs in the incubator 3 days ago. All 13 are developing so I’d say he is finding his mark! I posted on a local page that I may have some chicks for sale and in 15 mins I had a wait list for all of them 😳 I’ve never hatched ODs before so hopefully they develop well and all hatch! :) Pics are of the OD crew!

They are so pretty! Like little Swedish Flower hens with big tails. I am giving 17 Swedish Flower eggs to my 4 broodies today. I decided to let them all sit and when they hatch I will separate some of them. Hopefully they will hatch enough chicks for them to each have a couple and hopefully the hens will not fight! We’ll see how things go. The broodies are 2 buff Orpingtons and 2 salmon Pekins a.k.a. Bantam Cochins.

It’s so nice when you have dedicated broodies doing the work for you! They are a lot like Swedish flowers! Seems that pretty mottled look was popular in Swedish chickens :) I have two Silkie mommas that adopted my Polish chicks and they are doing an awesome job sharing the mothering. It’s super adorable 😍 And all three of my bantam Cochins went broody a couple days ago 😆 Got broodies coming out my ears 😁

I candled my OD eggs tonight and all 13 look like healthy developing eggs. It’s such a different hatching experience with home grown eggs as opposed to shipped eggs! All of the Polish eggs I incubated hatched too, 100% hatch rate. First that’s ever happened to me!

I ended up giving the eggs to my broodies today but I accidentally dropped one! One of the 4 broodies did not really seem interested in the eggs so I didn’t give her any. So I have 3 broodies sitting on 16 Swedish Flower eggs.

The bad news is that when I was giving the broodies the eggs I found…red mites.😩 So the coop will be getting a clean out and I’ll be taking a trip to the vet this week to get the mite meds. Hopefully the poor hens will be mite free soon.

Sorry for the mite discovery! That’s a bummer but sounds like you’ll get it cleared up fast.

Someone gave me some black copper marans eggs on Saturday so I popped a few of them in to see what happens. He said they were a week old and probably wouldn’t hatch but a week doesn’t seem that old to me so I stuck them in there to see 🤷🏻‍♀️

The buckeyes are all showing good development but only a handful of the lavender ameracuanas are doing anything. The ones I cracked some open look infertile. I messaged the seller to let them know the issue but I hated to do it because now I expect they’ll write back a nasty letter saying something derogatory about my incubator. Can’t imagine someone who would send dirty, porous infertile, missshape & pullet eggs is going to provide quality customer service. View attachment 3067944
