May 2022 hatch along

Well the saga continues… all the broodies want to sit in the same spot and all the other hens also want to lay in the same spot. 😕 One of the eggs got broken in the struggle today and one of the broodies got covered in egg.

I have a little incubator that holds about 8 eggs so I am going to fire it up and put some of the eggs in there in case the others don’t make it. That will leave 7 for the hens which will hopefully be more manageable for them. And the good news is that I will be able to candle the ones in the bator and keep an eye on them.

Makes one wonder what about that’s spot is SOO GOOD???
It will be my first hatch. I am hatching 18 Easter/Olive Eggers
What fun🤩 hope it goes smoothly!

The fine purveyor of dirty, infertile, porous, misshapen lavender Ameraucana eggs got back to me. They didn’t blame my incubator though. Instead said I should file a claim with USPS. 😂😂😂😂 I’m imagining a postal employee opening the package and replacing all the lovely, clean, fertile eggs with nasty ones. I get that it would be SuPER annoying to sell hatching eggs… but still take a little responsibility right?

Just set 4 Cotton Patch goose eggs from a reputable local breeder (lucked out with that), some pure welsh from my flock and a couple Welsh x White layer (for curiosity) I may add in some exhibition welsh pat way through incubation but undecided. I also have a broody that sat yesterday so lots of babies coming. Hatch day is my birthday, May 19. :wee

Here’s a pic of my eggs set on Tuesday!

The father is a blue egg breed, so the eggs should hatch out green or blue layers if they are pullets! She gave me a great variety of colors! I asked for 12 blue/green and 6 mixed just for variety for the kids. Everyone picked a letter to keep track of in candling & weighing! ❤️

I set 22 eggs on the night of the 16th. This is my first hatch ever. The goal is to hatch on the weekend so that my 4-year-old granddaughter can be here for the event. I originally had 6 eggs from Cream Legbar hens and the remaining 16 from Rhode Island Red heritage line. However, both have the opportunity for access to either a Cream Legbar or Rhode Island Red rooster. I will likely have some crosses.

I candled all the eggs last night at what was the start of day 7. Discovered that 20 of the eggs were fertile but had one early quitter. Moving forward, I still have 5 Cream Legbar and 14 Rhode Island Red that are viable.

The blue eggs were pretty easy to candle. I have a few photos of those that I've attached. The various shades of brown eggs were more difficult to see, but still possible. They didn't make very good photos, though, so sticking with photos of the blue eggs for now.

We are excited to watch this process unfold!
